There seems to be some optimism that he’ll only miss a couple weeks. No need to rush him. There’s a long season ahead of us.

I’m less concerned about TJ than some here, I guess. I get the sense that Groome May be having the same sort of issues that Pomeranz does, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the big CB has something to do with it. Here’s hoping it’s just an early fatigue/use injury after the offseason and he gets out there healthy by May. He looked incredible this spring, so get him healthy and dealing again.

But both times, it’s popped up after an extended period of rest. And if the MRI (I’m certain he had one) shows no UCL issue, that’s the end of it. MRI isn’t great for bone (x-ray is the best there), but for soft and connective tissue, it’s pretty damn good.

The caution is a good sign and it is nice that Groome is not afraid to disclose discomfort. Of course he has the cushion of not being on thin ice. There are guys who stubbornly try and fight through injuries and pay the price and guys who fear to let on they are hurt because their situation is so tenuous (no pun intended). Everyone loves the gamer who plays hurt but is almost never a good idea unless it is a game seven situation.

They were probably inclined to take it slow because his innings probably need to be managed this year, given he only threw about 55 innings last year.

This thread was like drag racing on a mountainside, but coming out alive.

My assumption is pitchers have always had to deal with various strains and small tears which are not even mentioned. The pitcher hopefully knows his body and from experience recognizes normal discomfort as opposed to something being seriously wrong. People used to call this sort of thing "getting stretched out." It comes from rehab and from ramping up. The key is knowing when to back off and stop short of serious injury.

Any updates on Groome? I feel like we'll be hearing Tommy John surgery news next.

I can’t respond to this without getting banned for foul language. 15-18 months...wow...just wow.

Multiple swear words, strung together barely coherently, followed by a Very Deep Sigh.
Disappointing obviously, but hopefully he comes back 100% and kills it.

Mild flexor strains tend to lead to this. I'm not shocked. Hopefully he comes back even stronger after they repair that tendon.
System has taken huge hits the past year.

Man, outside of Beeks, has there been anything good about the system to start the year? This sucks. Hopefully Groome comes back fine but it's never a guarantee

It sucks for the system obviously and it sucks even more for the kid and his loved ones. Rehab is going to be a long and a tough process and it doesn't always end up with Lackey's type of success. I wish him the best in the months to come and to see him one day on the Fenway mound.
