Why. Is. Hembree. Still. On. This. Team....? Heath Hembree’s continued employment by the Boston Red Sox is brought to you by the stupidity of Carson Smith.

Pedro my point was simple if you're going to overlook Porcello's good stats this year because of his career stats, shouldn't you do the samething with Bradley and Vaz? I haven't bashed JBJ. Vazquez is a average offensive catcher when he's hitting at a incredibly high BABIP like last year. When he's not doing that (like this year), he's one of the worst hitting catchers in baseball. You get his BAbip was .348 last year and it's. 209 this year right?

Yeap, should come up this year (because how can that atrocious number get any worse), and I also get that he has a career 5.9% walk rate with a .086 ISO (bad). That is the point, he brings nothing else to the table besides a (sometimes high) BABIP, and if he doesn't, his bat is useless. He doesn't walk and he doesn't hit for power.

Vazquez doesn’t strike out much.15% this year. That’s a valuable skill. With a normalized BABIP, he hits for a solid average. A good defensive catcher who can hit for a decent average (even if it’s an empty one with limited walks and power) is a valuable player.

You're right actually about the strikeout ability, but if you raise his average to the normal (let's say by 80 points). You're still talking about a catcher who gets on base at a 300 ish on base clip with no power. That's closer to a backup type or a replacement level type of player.

How much power is "no power" is kind of important too here. A BABIP reset and a regression back up to a .100 Iso makes him like a .240/.300/.340 player (which is in line with his career numbers). With decent defense, that's like a 1.5-2.0 WAR player, which isn't ideal for a starter but is fine if we're talking about a team's weakest position player.

I think you're a little high with the ISO (career .086). You're also right about you're concept of the weakest position player. My problem might be with Vazquez himself. His defense is overated. Add that on top of the weak bat and you can see why I'm frustrated with the player.

It wasn't that long ago that catcher looked like a strength both presently and in the future. But now it seems like CV has regressed both at the plate and behind it. Swihart has just been a total disappointment, regardless if you want to blame management or the player. And Leon has gone back to being Leon. It seemed like we had surplus value and now it is a hole in the lineup.
On another note it is good to see Benny picking it up lately. I was beginning to worry that he had bulked up too much and lost something, players have done that in the past. Now it is time for Devers to get going, he is scaring me a bit with his swinging at balls way out of the zone, smarten up Raffy!!
