WOW>I live near where this kid plays HS ball. I ONLY saw him play once and that was last Saturday VS the #2 team in NJ. He went 3-3 with a walk. He was voted Gatorade NJ Player Of The Year.

Despite the atrocious Red Sox farm system, I like what they have in the outfield. Currently up there, 2 solid bats with Benny and Betts, and an elite fielder in Jackie. Coming up soon, some potential depth there with Tate Matheny and Danny Mars who could be 4th or 5th outfielders, and farther back in the system, Cole Brannen and Nick Decker who could fill a spot should they lose someone to free agency in a few years.

Matheny and/or Mars could be backup outfielders down the road, but JBJ is a free agent after the 2020 season as is Betts. The likelihood of Brannen (who struggled mightily in A ball) and Decker who has yet to show what he can do and is quite young replacing either of Betts or JBJ if either or both depart via free agency for the 2021 season is very slim. From what I read about Decker, he has good power, he has a good plate approach, the hit tool is in question, and they're going to try him out in CF, but odds are he winds up in LF. We'll see what he can do. The Sox are very thin in the minors just about everywhere and it's pretty glaring in the outfield, but both Brannen who might never hit and Decker are long-term type of prospects. If the Sox wanted a bat to replace Mookie and/or JBJ with a potential impact outfielder, then they probably would have went with a college bat, like a Steele Walker, who'd move up the system much faster. And maybe they do get a college OF bat. I really don't know who's highly regarded that's out there. Guess we'll find out more soon.

I think we should try to re-sign Betts and JBJ, and if we can't we can pick up another free agent for a year or 2.

What JBJ's contract will look like is totally up in the air. I don't think anyone truly know how much he'll get and whether or not that price will be right for the Sox.

I think we should try to re-sign Betts and JBJ, and if we can't we can pick up another free agent for a year or 2. I wouldn't re-sign Bradley to a long-term deal after the 2020 season. Why tie up long-term bucks on a wrong-side of 30 guy whose value is defense which will sure to be declining? That would leave you with an expensive CF whose best days in CF are behind him while his bat still doesn't get better. Then add in that the Sox will be looking to re-sign at least one of Sale, Xander, and Porcello the year before and what Mookie will cost will be through the roof. I have no doubt the Sox will try to sign Mookie. Nobody in their right mind wouldn't try. Trying doesn't necessarily equal succeeding, but we'll see what happens. They only have so much money to go around for all of these soon to be free agent players. And when ranking these guys JBJ would be toward the bottom of the list of priorities. And yeah, signing a free agent outfielder at some point is probably what will happen if one or both outfielders depart and the kids aren't likely ready. Maybe by then the Sox will find their next Benintendi but it'll be hard as they won't be drafting 7th in the immediate future - which is a good thing.

Let's not let this turn into an MLB outfield thread.

And it looks like he's basically signed: www.philly.com/philly/sports/high_school/nick-decker-red-sox-mlb-draft-seneca-new-jersey-20180605.html?amphtml=y&mobi=true&__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar&__twitter_impression=trueSeneca's Nick Decker drafted by Red Sox in second round of MLB draft Phil Anastasia, Staff Writer Updated: Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 1:27 PM Nick Decker originally signed with Maryland but agreed to terms with the Red Sox. When Nick Decker was in first or second grade, the class assignment was to write about a future profession. “I wrote that I wanted to be a professional baseball player,” Decker said. “My teacher said I better come up with a back-up plan.” Decker, a senior outfielder at Seneca High School, took a huge step toward realizing his lifelong goal Monday night when he was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 64th overall pick in the MLB draft. The 6-foot, 210-pound Decker said Tuesday morning that he had agreed to contract terms with the Red Sox, although some details needed to be worked out. The slot value for the 64th overall pick was $1,010,500. It was the last $1 million-plus slot in the draft. “I just can’t believe how blessed I am,” said Decker, whose Seneca team was scheduled to play Allentown in the Group 3 state semifinals on Tuesday afternoon. “I thank God every day for this opportunity.” Decker said he watched the draft with his family and close friends along with his long-time coach, Guy Lynam, who runs the All-Out travel baseball organization. He said he got a call from one of his advisors just before the pick. “He asked me if I would be willing to make a deal with the Red Sox,” Decker said. “I had a minute. It felt like 10 seconds.” Decker is a two-time, first-team All-South Jersey selection by the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association. This season, he was batting .492 entering Tuesday afternoon’s Group 3 state semifinal vs. Allentown with seven home runs, five doubles, 24 RBIs and 30 runs. He also had walked 34 times, as teams regularly pitched around him. “He’s a college-level hitter playing against high school players,” Ocean City coach Andrew Bristol said after his top-seeded team walked Decker three times in a 4-1 loss to Seneca in the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals. Decker also is a top pitcher, although he threw limited innings this season. But his arm strength was a factor in his draft status, since he projects as a possible right-fielder. Decker had committed to attend the University of Maryland on a baseball scholarship. Once he signs, he will begin his professional career as a member of one of the sport’s most fabled organizations. Decker said he has played in Fenway Park the last two summers in the Area Code games, a showcase circuit for the country’s top prospects. “To walk out the tunnel into Fenway Park, it felt like a movie,” Decker said. “To step in the same batters box as Ted Willianms, play on the same field as Babe Ruth, it didn’t feel real.” Decker said he “never had any hate” for the Red Sox but wasn’t a fan of the team as a youngster. “I love them now,” Decker said

"willing to make a deal" .... hmmmm. Do we see this as below slot as well?

"willing to make a deal" .... hmmmm. Do we see this as below slot as well? Very unlikely. That is likely just referring to the call teams make to see if a player is willing to accept a number before picking them. Doesn't mean it's below slot or anything.

Can't think NJ HS outfielder without thinking of Ryan Kalish. Is Decker more of a power than the slashing gap hitter Kalish?
