Porcello vs. Lopez, two pretty good pitchers who are fun to watch live because they keep things moving, on a 70-degree Sunday afternoon at Fenway sounds like heaven.

The pitching matchups are closer than you think (except for game 1). The White Sox threw out their best starters against the Sox this series.

The Sox selected the contract of Justin Haley before today's game and optioned Beeks. Haley is now the 39th man on the 40 man roster.
It's interesting that the Sox go with another pitcher instead of a position player like Lin (who already has a 40 man roster spot).
The Sox probably aren't afraid of losing Haley on waivers if they have to expose him to that later in the year (if they need a 40 man roster spot). The Sox now have a ton of mop up inning relievers on this pitching staff. Like 2 or 3 of them in Johnson, Velazquez, and now Haley.
I assume Haley is only going to be here for a short while until Mookie is ready to go.

This is Haley's 7th year in the Sox system and his first appearance for the Sox now will be his ML debut. It is quite unusual for a player to spend that much time in one team's system without getting a shot at the majors. He does seem to have gradually improved. He can be a FA after the season and also is Rule 5 eligible. Jerez has been in the system even longer but he started out as an outfielder.
I'm a bit surprised they didn't give Scott a shot. They could use another LH RP. Scott also would have had to be added to the 40-man. Buttrey seems likely to get a shot at some point. He is on the 40-man and has struck out 39 in 24 innings.

Yeah Robby Scott or Buttrey would have made more sense to me too, but Haley won't be here for long either way. Hopefully he gets in on a blowout and makes on appearance in a Sox uniform to come full circle.

Haley actually pitched in 10 games for the Twins last year. The Angels drafted him the Rule 5 draft, and traded him to the Padres, who traded him to the Twins, who returned him to Boston in July after trying to play DL games for awhile. Once they became surprise contenders, I'm sure it just became harder to hide him on the back of the roster.
It's nice to see for Haley, who has been good this year. Since reaching Triple-A in 2016 he has a 3.28 ERA in over 200 innings at the level. Timing worked out well for him also, as Shepherd would've been the obvious choice in a case like this, but he pitched six innings yesterday.

Will be interesting to see Moncada for a few games. I haven't seen any of him since he was traded.

Ohh I knew Haley had some MLB experience before coming here. Finally making his Sox debut is something he's been working at for years now though.

I looked at Haley's stat page on this site and somehow my eyes did not see the Minnesota line.

As Sale prepares to face Moncada, who was part of the talent payment to get him, it's interesting to recall something I read in mlb.com.
Not only is Moncada responsible for Sale's presence, but indirectly so is Nomar Garciaparra (who is also indirectly responsible for Brock Holt as well).
The Sox drafted Nomar in 1994. Nomar was the best SS in Red Sox history and the Sox had some really good ones (Cronin, Pesky, Stephens, Petrocelli, and now Bogaerts).
Nomar gets traded in a 4 team deal for Orlando Cabrera and Mientkiewicz, which helps the Sox win the 2004 World Series.
Cabrera departs as a free agent after the Series and the Sox get two draft picks as compensation: Jed Lowrie and Jacoby Ellsbury. Lowrie gets the GW hit in the 2008 ALDS against the Angels and gets dealt after the 2011 season for Mark Melancon who a year later gets traded for Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt.
Meanwhile, Jacoby Ellsbury is a big contributor to the Sox' 2007 and 2013 World Series champs and also has a fantastic 2011 season.
Ellsbury leaves for the MFYs and the Sox get one compensation pick in the draft - Michael Kopech.
And Kopech, along with Moncada, Basabe and Diaz gets traded for Chris Sale.
And so the link goes on.

Yeah, the more I think about it, I don't know why the Sox didn't just call up Robby Scott who is doing really well in AAA this year. Scott would have more of a role on this team the next few days over Haley.
The only reason I can come up with why the team called up Haley instead is because Brian Johnson was stretched out for a long period of time in last night's game. Johnson will probably be unavailable for a game or two.

Umpires are the worst. Sale struckout Abreu, but instead the umpire called a strike a ball. Then Sale threw a pitch that was called a strike that was a ball to Davidson that he struck him out on.

This is going to be one of those games that you have no idea what's a strike and what's a ball

By the way, Martinez is out of the lineup offically with this back tightness thing again. Can the Sox just DH him until this goes away at least?

Sale is going to have to carry the Sox to a victory this game. No Martinez, no Mookie. It's hard to put up runs when your two best hitters aren't in the lineup.

Tonight's lineup is hard to watch. Once Benny gets out, you really don't know how they'll score.
