Good game to win, but I can't figure out Kimbrel's presence in the 9th. That seemed like an awful waste. I would have gone with Haley for the 9th and if he lets a couple of guys on, then go get Kimbrel, but hope you don't have to. Now tomorrow, if the game is close and Sale can't go 9 the hope is that Hembree and Workman can get the tough outs. Hope the Sox finally swing the bats for Sale tomorrow so he can cruise and the final outs are low leverage. I can't figure out Kimbrel at all in 1 run or 4 run leads. Meaning, I don't know if he's going to give up the homerun to blow a one run lead on a homerun or I don't know if he's going to completely stink with a 4 run lead. His comfort zone is that clean ninth inning with 2 or more runs in a save situation. He's definitely not dominant like he was last season, although he has been very good. Yesterday was garbage time. Some pitchers are adrenaline junkies and it's tougher for them to get thru garbage time. Really, I actually was hoping to see Justin Haley in the 9th yesterday. Now if the Sox have a tight game this afternoon, Kimbrel won't be available, and with Sale, the games usually are tight.

Part of me wonders if we'll need defensive replacements for Martinez AND Devers going forward. Have you watched how good Devers has been other than that one error in the last few weeks? Agree. He has the instincts to be an above average 3rd basemen in the future, from my viewing. All young players need repetition. Growing pains is a part of the maturation process.

If you are going to play Holt at first and Nunez at 2nd against a right handed pitcher and Swihart isn't starting, why is he still on the team?

The mistakes have been fewer lately as well. He'll be good.

I'd love to ask Chris Sale in confidence about what he thinks about getting close strikes called as a Red Sox player compared to when he was with the White Sox.

WOW>how did the ump miss that 0-1 pitch? That wasn't even near the Black There has been at least 5 strikes in the zone thrown by Sale called balls in 2 2/3 innings.

Nunez has been so horrible on the bases this series. He hasn't been good at anything this year.

At least we've averaged 20 pitches an inning on offense despite not walking once.

Sale with a very inefficient inning here. Now who knows if he'll go 6 innings with a tired bullpen.

Great job by Nunez and Devers to extend the inning (and the lead) and take advantage of all the walks in the inning. Great AB by Martinez working the walk too.

And a great inning by Sale to follow that up.

Excellent 5th inning by Sales. Gives him a chance to make it through seven or at least pitch into the 7th.

Beni with the web gem. His defensive bWAR is not good. I don't know why, he seems perfectly adequate in the outfield.

I feel for Jackie. At times, it looks like he’s trying to swing a sledgehammer up there. The guy HAS to come out of this at some point... doesn’t he?

I feel for Jackie. At times, it looks like he’s trying to swing a sledgehammer up there. The guy HAS to come out of this at some point... doesn’t he? He's fine. He's ripping the ball now and looks comfortable in the batter's box. The results will come. He's had at least 5 outs hit over 100 mph this week. According to statcast data, he should be hitting .232 and slugging .401 (and climbing) instead of his actual .185 and .291. These numbers have risen quite a bit recently. baseballsavant.mlb.com/expected_statistics?type=batter&year=2018&position=&team=BOS&min=50

I'm not sure how to handle the 7th, but it'd be nice if Sale could get another batter or two. Our bullpen really needs it.

Holt does a good job everywhere he plays. He doesn't look comfortable at 1st but has made a few decent plays.

Haley will likely get his debut - also Workman will hopefully get innings in this game.

lol that was bound to happen after Mookie homered earlier. JD doesn't take too kindly to that.

Here is where Sale needs to just throw the ball over the plate and dare the bottom of the order to hurt him. And of course he walks the lead-off man.
