I expect we'll see a few transactions today. We have Portland one over and we have the GCL team like 4 over.

I wonder if Trey Ball's spot on the Portland roster could be vulnerable.

I wonder if Trey Ball's spot on the Portland roster could be vulnerable. Cuts could be on the table, but it seems like the org's been more willing to just load up the DL this year instead of outright cutting people. Either way, my money's on McAvoy. A head-scratching draft pick from the start, he hasn't been good at any level aside from Lowell, and has been clearly overmatched all year in Portland.

1) Just a reminder that posters are strongly discouraged from speculating about cuts on the forum. These are young men engaging in a profession, and getting cut is literally their getting fired and, often, having to seek a new career. Add to that the fact that many players' families read this website, and that's just not something we're interested in having on our forums out of respect.
2) In terms of the organization's general philosophy, I think I disagree with the notion that anything's changed, at least in-season. If anything, I think there are fewer phantom DL guys than in the past - I think I see two guys on the DL who I don't know to be actually hurt, whereas in the past there were phantom DL catchers at every level, and typically a couple phantom DL relievers.
The one thing that I have noticed that's changed under Dombrowski is that there are more (or actually any) off-season cuts, whereas in the past the organization seemed to operate under a system in which they brought most guys into camp and wound up with more spring training cuts. The way they do it now probably does right by the players more - why waste the guy's time in your camp if he's got no shot at making a team, so it's better to let him try to catch on somewhere else - but also leaves them vulnerable when injuries hit. Like, was the Portland outfield situation so set in stone that neither Bryan Hudson nor Mike Meyers was worth keeping around, at least for camp? They've now had to sign a number of guys for depth reasons in Portland (although you never know when they just really like an Indy guy or need him to take a roster spot). It's understandable both ways.

Admittedly I don't have any hard evidence to back this up, and I absolutely defer to you Chris on whether guys are phantom-DL'd or not, but after staring down the org chart for a number of years, it doesn't feel quite right to me. 8/25 in Greenville, 5/25 in Salem...plus those numbers are most likely going to increase with this big roster crunch. But like I said, if you know most of those guys are actually dinged up, I believe ya. Just one man's observation.

As far as Salem--we know what happened to Glorius. Cooney pitched in rehab Tuesday in Lowell, and Kyri is there too, even if we're assuming he had a setback of some sort as he's only had 1 AB (though he did play in the scrimmage the day before opening day).

In Greenville, Scherff, Groome, Duron, Schellenger and Nail are all legit. The last two have been out all year. At most, there are four guys currently on the phantom DL, eliminating players we know to be injured or who they wouldn't phantom DL for roster space. My guess is it's more like two or maybe three.

Washington's rehab got transferred to the GCL actually. Nail, Duron, and Schellenger were rehabbing in Extended. We know Monge was playing in extended very early on. Quiroz had hernia surgery. Groome and Perry had TJ. Rusconi left in the middle of the last game he played. So did Renda. And actually, I guess the one thing I should add as far as a change under the Dombrowski regime that's relevant is the organization has really tightened up in terms of information about injuries. Even people at the affiliates aren't being told what's up with guys.

Casas is a bust, when can we trade him?

Washington's rehab got transferred to the GCL actually. Missed that, thanks--pretty sure he was in Lowell's dugout Wednesday. But one way or the other, not a phantom DL situation for sure.

Esplin just hit a three run home run a really long way to left. He's got some serious power in his swing.

Ockimey is gaining more and more steam as a major league prospect. His left and right splits may make sure he’s never a starter, but he’s definitely a major leaguer in my opinion. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see him jump a couple spots in the rankings in July.

Sure would be good to see him make some adjustments and hit lefties a bit better. He really does seem to have a ML bat against RH. At least he’s still just 22.

In the spirit of way-too-early-and-SSS-but-I’m-excited-anyway, he’s hitting the crap out of the ball, and in the air. Lots of grounders last year but this year he’s almost all air. He was relatively young out of IMG and it’s good to see him starting well in SS A ball against some college draftees.

Casas (DH), Northcut (3B), and Milligan making their pro debuts today. Combined 0/9 with 4Ks. We're doomed.

Also wouldn’t be surprised to see him jump a couple spots in the rankings in July. How does his defense look at first base this season? Anyone paying attention that much? He's interesting if he can become at least adequate there. He's less interesting if he looks uncomfortable out there.
