I don't think it says anything about Pedroia. It's a no-risk signing.

You're probably right, but I still hope Phillips might even be the guy who ultimately pushes Nunez out of town.

Yeah, it's a no-risk signing that could fill one of a number of holes depending on how things shake out. It struck me more as an indictment of Nunez than anything - he was supposed to be the Pedroia backup plan, and if he were panning out, they wouldn't even be looking.

Maybe by mid July we’ll have a fringe replacement level 2B and C. One can dream.

Maybe by mid July we’ll have a fringe replacement level 2B and C. One can dream. In Leon's last 21 games, he has a 117 wRC+. In Vazquez' last 15 games, he has a 137 wRC+. I imagine people will complain all year long because of how slow they both started, but neither one of them is a liability at all lately.

It's interesting that it seems like Phillips will be used more in the minors as a 3B.

I'd say it's likely that Nunez's days are numbered.
Phillips is mediocre but consistent. He hasn't really had a huge drop in offensive production.
I think his presence means that they will go with a tandem of Holt and Phillips rather than Holt and Nunez and they want Phillips to play some 3b so that Devers has a backup better than Holt who's not much of a 3b.
I don't see the Sox going after a 2b in July at this point. I think they will ride it out with Holt and Phillips under the assumption that Pedroia likely doesn't return.

It's actually surprising that Phillips isn't playing in the majors already. Why didn't we sign him instead of Nunez in the first place?
One thing about him though is that he has played mainly 2B in his career. Very little 3B and no 1B.

I look forward to getting him into the lineup. Anyone who can drive in a hundred and three while slashing only .261/.310/396 is clearly one of those mythical creatures known (hi, Nick!) as "an RBI guy."
All championship teams need an RBI guy or three.
* Joe Morgan (TV version) -- and by proxy Tony Perez, the ultimate RBI guy -- approves of this post.

Vazquez and Leon are good for one BABIP driven hot streak per year. But sure, thanks for not being absolutely horrid for 20 games. They’re two of the worst players at their position.

I think signing Philips for depth is a smart especially for competition at 2B not so much 3B/1B .Holt has shown or be inconsistent and injury prone over the years . Nunez hasn’t looked right since coming off injury. Pedroia is a complete unknown at this point. However ultimately the best trade fit for the Red Sox would be Todd Frazier. Wouldn’t cost much to aquire. Can split time between 1B/3B and DH some. Takes pressure off Devers at 3B and is insurance for Moreland in case his numbers dip. If the Redsox are looking for a power hitting RHH he fits this team perfectly.

It's interesting that it seems like Phillips will be used more in the minors as a 3B. Bud, nothing in the two tweets you posted says that. Rosenthal is only saying he is going to play some third base. To any extent you might think that he's going to be used more at 3B from reading the Rosenthal tweet, Abraham's debunks it. IMO, seems pretty clear they're signing him to see if he's a better option than Nunez because they need better RH sticks. If Pedroia comes back, that person needs to be able to play multiple positions. Playing 3B against tough LHP is kind of important.

Ok well when they’re still raking in a couple weeks feel free to tell me “I told you so”. I’m fine if they’re still here in a month, but that doesn’t mean they’re not both bad.

Love the move. A potential right handed compliment to Holt/replacement for Pedroia (this season) and excuse to kick Nunez off the team. What's not to like? Can even sit Devers vs. a lefty.

Like the move he is right handed bat and still hit well last year and can play multiple positions and DH. Will help against LH pitchers and doesn't cost you anything. If he has lost it you can still address this problem before trade deadline and trade for possible help with players like Beltre or Frazier

Worst case scenario he helps out some guys in Pawtucket for a bit. Best case scenario no more Nunez. Hard not to like this move

Are we getting to the point where Phillips might get a call up at expansion to see if he replaces Nunez at 3rd?
