Red Sox acquire Steve Pearce from TOR for Santiago Espinal

DL/dump Nunez and roll with Holt + Lin as your second baseman. Or do something with Swihart - who now won't only not catch, but will never deserve a start at 1B/DH/LF over Pearce vs a LHP. Nunez has started to show signs of life, though - 108 wRC+ in June. I see three possibilities: - Lin goes down. This is the most likely move, since he has options and both Holt and Nunie can move around the IF. - Hellenic flu for someone. - There's another move coming that will affect all this. No! No. I cannot abide any optimism regarding Nunez. And anyway fangraphs says only 83 wRC+ for June. If this move basically amounts to getting rid of Nunez and replacing his ABs and defense with Pearce, Holt, and Lin (and getting Moreland some rest against lefties), then it seems like a nice little move.

I don't get the move really. Yeah he's nice against LHP, but that seems like a big price for a rental.

The Sox only have 6 players with a wRC+ north of 88 vs LHP - one of whom is Moreland, who had no legitimate first baseman behind him before the Pearce trade. Pearce may not have been imperative, and you may not love the deal, but he helps to MLB roster. He's a far better fit than Swihart and Nunez.

So what would Swiharts value be? I couldn't see much more than international money right now.

I think this settles the debate whether thinks the Sox aren't going to trade for a reliever though. The Sox just spent a top 20 prospect on a relatively minor need on the roster. The bullpen is by far a bigger need. This kind of seals that fate. Dombrowski is trading for a reliever this deadline come heck or high water.

In retrospect, Pearce seems like twice the hitter Swihart is at the moment so I see a lot of 1B platoon and DH time for Pearce the rest of the way. I don't see him playing the outfield unless it's a emergency type of situation.
Time to deal Swihart now however because he's going to get zero playing time all over again.

Basically, Pearce is taken the role that Hanley would have had if he had been willing to be relegated to the bench without his vesting option being a major issue, so in essence Hanley Ramirez has now been replaced on the roster. And yes, I wouldn't anticipate a ton of time in the OF for Pearce. More likely JDM would get some LF time or they can spot Holt in the OF and have Brandon Phillips at 2b as another depth option.

Yeap for about 1-3 million dollars and a prospect, the Sox have replaced Hanley. At least Pearce should actually fill the role respectively.

Pearce has a great swing for Fenway. 53 percent pull percentage this year and 48 percent pull percentage in his career. He's going to hit for a lot of doubles in the second half at home.

I don't know how accurate this is, but here-
Red Sox payroll is basically saying that the Sox are going over the tax with this and soon to be other moves to come.

The Red Sox have had the second best bullpen in MLB, and Ty Buttrey has a 16.1 10 1 0 4 23 line in his last 13 outings going back to May 27.
It seems like a weakness because Joe Kelly has been awful in June, but he was one of the best relievers in MLB the first two months. If he returns to form, which is likelier than not, there's no need to add an arm. And you really have to give Buttrey a shot before you trade for someone.

Mitch Moreland is 2/10 with 6 SO versus Sabathia. Pearce also has 6 SO, but it's in 36 PA with .273 / .333 / .515.

I mean, that's kind of why you need to trade for a reliever. Your second best reliever all of a sudden became a pumkin out of no where. It's a matter of who you need to trust come playoff and September time in the 8th inning. The way Kelly and Barnes are up and down doesn't promote a lot of trust in the 8th inning. www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 The Sox aren't the second best bullpen according to value either. They are the 4th best team in the league. Both the Yankees and Astros are a half run or better xFIP wise and ERA wise according to fangraphs. It might not be a weakness when you measure it across MLB, but it's a weakness when comparing it to the other 2 other great teams in the AL in the Astros and Yankees and those are the teams you will be competing against in October.

Espinal was one of the funnest players to follow this year, but overall I’m ok with this trade. Not sure he would be a starting caliber player in the majors. More likely to be a utility infielder, which we currently have a glut of. If the Sox have faith in CDLG and CJ Chatham (true SS), along with Holt and Marco Hernandez sticking around, then Espinal is a good trade piece. Pearce fits what they need really well. Sad to see Espinal go, but you can’t fleece teams with every trade. I’d say this one was pretty even.
ADD: Plus I forgot about Lin. He’s less than a year older than Espinal, already in the majors, and can play the outfield. To be clear, I’m not trying to be down on Espinal and in a perfect world he’s still on our team. But this was a good trade in my opinion. Shores up the bench for a championship run.

It's a shame to see Swihart become such a waste of a prospect given his lofty status thru the years. Send him off to a team that will play him for a PTNL and maybe he can do something that brings the Sox back something in return. Still rooting for the kid.

I am not loving this trade, but thats the prospect lover in me. Pearce should definitely be an upgrade for the bench (if not start at 2b). I have been intrigued by Espinal since we had signed him, and it definitely stung a bit when they declared him the prospect being sent out. I know that this doesn't help NOW, but we should be ok with this move in the long run. I doubt the Sox will win the WAR value, but at least the value of a dollar today is higher than 5 years from now. I was certainly nervous about the MI depth in the minors, but a few things made me a little less concerned. #1 Although the draft is good we tend to snag a lot more MI depth from International free agency. They are very far from panning out, but a few tend to trickle through from either SS or 2b. So we have a good chance to restock in a few days. #2 We gain the value of Steve Pearce this year while Chatham, Lin, Possibly Netzer and most importantly Esteban Quiroz have the potential to play next year. What the Sox lost in Espinal they should get from one of these players offensively. We also need to remember that Marco Hernandez should be back (At least I assume so). I honestly would love to see him in a starting opportunity. Some may disagree, but I think he has the ability to do very well offensively.
* I obviously want Pedroia to start, but the injuries have mounted a little bit. So Marco starting would be assuming pedroia at least misses some time. Regardless, Marco fits the role of depth, but I think he is potentially starting caliber at 2b. He also answers the SS depth issue if we lose Xander for awhile (fingers crossed we dont).

If we get rid of Nuñez does that mean he can’t exercise his player option? Seems relevant if they’re going over the cap this year that Nuñez’ 4 million would be a good salary dump.

I think he is only a waste in the sense that the Sox cant afford to give him AB. Its definitely a downside on this years roster where its basically sink or swim. Id guess if he gained the situation that Lewis Brinson for the Marlins is in then he would be very good. It does kill me that hes even considered for trade, but its a business. Spoiled with players like Benintendi and Devers running right out the gate haha. At least when I was playing there was nothing worse than inconsistent playing time. Paticularly hitting where you can't find a groove so I feel for the kid.

I like this get. With Casas, Northcut, Howlett, Diaz, Flores in the back end of the system, along with Chavis, Chatham (If he can stay healthy), and Devers with potential, there isn't much room for Espinal. He can backup first and the whole outfield, so whenever 1 of 4 players needs a rest, which will be many days, he gets to play. Also, he has now played for all AL East teams. (Or at least will have soon).

Pearce
Career vs left .841 OPS 1.27 +wRC+ Career vs right .737 OPS 1.01 wRC+
2018 vs. left .889 OPS 1.43 wRC+ 2018 vs right .833 OPS 1.28 wRC+
Note: He missed 7 weeks this year with an oblique strain so 2018 is a bit SSS (86 PA)

I imagine that getting Pearce a full month before the deadline also factored into the cost. This is a little bit more of a rental than standard.

As much as I like Pearce, I don't love that we dumped Espinal for him. He'd become a clear top 5 infield (non-1B) prospect in this system. That says more about the system than Pearce. Espinal fits pretty well into that Asuaje/Dubon category of players who would be nice, cheap depth pieces in the future, but I think you trade him, one-for-one, for actual major league help. The big disappointment is that Espinal had become, by far, the most enjoyable position player to follow this year. This. It's easy to overvalue Espinal at first blush because of how thin the system is and the fact he's one of like 5 guys having a really good year. But honestly, he's probably a better-hitting, worse-defending version of Lin (somewhere between Lin and Marco Hernandez?). It feels like he's more than he is given external circumstances. Trade feels about even to me. And at this point, Swihart has to go, although optioning Lin to keep them from having to negotiate that trade in the DFA window is probably what happens.

Vazquez has gained .3 WAR in about a week. He's still in negative territory at -.3 fWAR but that's a pretty substantial 1 week gain.

I'm just afraid that the desire to stay under the luxury tax limit (while perfectly acceptable) will lead to absorbing a higher prospect cost in a deal for a reliever at the deadline.
