Everybody knows Nelson de la Rosa, but who is Karim Garcia?

I was expecting Valencia.

.291/.349/.519 in a SSS of 86 PAs. Does he even make the team right away or is he just depth?

I like Pearce a whole lot more than Canha and Valencia. He's a proven solid bat vs LHP, plays a solid first base, and is tolerable in LF.
He's more than just depth -- he should grab a decent chunk of starts at 1B/DH/LF, the majority of the time we face a LHP.

.840 career OPS vs. LHP, .738 vs. RHP.

As much as I like Pearce, I don't love that we dumped Espinal for him. He'd become a clear top 5 infield (non-1B) prospect in this system.

He's on the second year of a two-year, $12.5 million contract. He has about $3.25 million coming to him the second half of the season. That would put the RS right at or over the $237 million threshhold. I hope to God the Jays are paying some of the freight here. I don't think Steave Pearce is good enough to justify not being able to add a RP.

Well now Steve Pearce can claim what Eric Hinske couldn't quite accomplish - he will now have played for all 5 AL East teams in his career. Hinske didn't play for Baltimore.
Anyways, on this roster Pearce is pretty much a perfect fit, exactly what they needed. I think I speculated about him a few days ago when they were looking at Canha in the trade forum.
He's great Mitch Moreland insurance, can play the OF if JBJ stops hitting or somebody flat out needs a day off, plus he's a PH that can come off the bench if need be.
His former teammate, Adam Lind, came much cheaper, though.
Espinal should be a really good pickup for Toronto. Overall the Sox will lose the WAR trade value, a future starting SS for a backup OF/1b/DH (a really good one), but that tells me that the Sox regard CJ Chatham as their primary SS of the future should Bogaerts leave.

Espinal fits pretty well into that Asuaje/Dubon category of players who would be nice, cheap depth pieces in the future, but I think you trade him, one-for-one, for actual major league help. The big disappointment is that Espinal had become, by far, the most enjoyable position player to follow this year.

Exactly what we needed Travis to be this year. A shame...
I will say that it's great to have an option to platoon with Moreland.

Steve Pearce is now the oldest player on the Red Sox, though he could be dethroned by Brandon Phillips at some point in the semi-near future.

DL/dump Nunez and roll with Holt + Lin as your second baseman. Or do something with Swihart - who now won't only not catch, but will never deserve a start at 1B/DH/LF over Pearce vs a LHP.

Who goes from the 25-man? My money is on Swihart. Perhaps, although it could be Lin and they hang onto Swihart a little longer to deal him away.

I see three possibilities: - Lin goes down. This is the most likely move, since he has options and both Holt and Nunie can move around the IF. - Hellenic flu for someone. - There's another move coming that will affect all this.

I'd guess that Dombrowski is working on it. I think Swihart could be one of 3 pieces when the Sox acquire a high leverage reliever. And I think Dombrowski will do this sooner than later. I wouldn't mind if Swihart was traded for the next Santiago Espinal.

Agreed Lin is most likely, but I don't want to see it happen. Nunez can't move around the IF - he can barely move period right now with his knee problems. A DL stint is quite justifiable. And he's rocking horrific numbers vs LHP this year, so there's not even value in keeping him rather than having a LHH-only situation at 2B with Holt and Lin.

for those saying he can play the outfield, he's probably even worse out there defensively than JD now.

Scientific studies show that type of flu can affect the knees! But seriously, maybe two weeks on the shelf would help him become something closer to the player he was last year.

Hot take: Steve Pearce is presently a better defensive second baseman than Eduardo Nunez, and given the choice, I'm taking Pearce to play there. Pearce played 18 games there in 2015, 15 in 2016. Didn't embarrass himself.
