At first I was really confused, but they want him to get the reps in Lowell while Portland is on their all star break.

To which I asked myself... why did they bother calling him up to Portland for 2 games? The reason: Spinners were traveling from Norwich, Connecticut back to Lowell after Friday's game, but Portland was in... Hartford. Makes sense to have him meet up with Portland there. I wonder how they got him there though - do they get him a cab? Does the Spinners bus go out of its way to drop him off? Do they send an intern to drive him? Unfortunately, the Spinners have an off-day tomorrow, so he might only get one extra game out of it. My guess is he'll play in Lowell tonight, and then will go up to Portland rather than go to Auburn with the Spinners.

Combine the home run with two doubles, and Chavis has his best game since he got back. 5 XBHs in as many games in Lowell. Good to see him still ripping the ball after his suspension.

Reyes goes six innings with only one earned run. 8 Ks to 0 BBs. He’s been consistently amazing all year long. I think he’s due for a well earned promotion to Salem.

When I was a kid and would read Gammons use the term shuttle players, I wondered if there was an actual shuttle. The job as driver of that shuttle seemed like it would be a pretty great job. Then I'd think, the Pawtucket to Boston line would be fun, but the other way might depress me.

When I was like seven I saw the home run apple at Shea Stadium and figured "oh, so THAT'S why they call New York 'The Big Apple.'"

And actually a phrase made up by a ---- sportswriter. John Fitzgerald. Pony racing reporter. His articles come up in a bunch of books about famous horses. I'd bet it was probably a line he heard some degenerate use referencing betting his mortgage. But damn, if he could have trademarked that? Brinks truck.

Speaking of Gammons and Reyes conbined.... Great example of when K/BB isn't entirely instructive in context. He doesn't walk guys but in 275.1 innings, that's not really a worldbeating strikeout rate either at 8 per 9. I long for the old days of Gammons following the minors from afar. Travis Lakins would certainly be this year's guy who'd help in the bullpen down the stretch (and probably be one of the most realistic guys to get that mantle from PG) and Reyes would be the next great pitching prospect in the system based on his K/BB being north of 8.
