Baseball is such a weird game. This was one of those one run games that just felt like it would end badly....at least it looked/felt that way to me. We are in a bit of a slump - won't last long - but - that's baseball.
Yuck, though.

Hembree is mediocre. Barnes is inconsistent. You need a new second baseman.

I dont understand Cora’s refusal to pinch hit. Moreland might have been a nice choice.

That game was a kick in the balls. Never really felt it was going to be their day. Too bad for Brian Johnson. He deserved better. So why is Pomeranz keeping his spot over Johnson?
But hey radiohix and Jimed - if you'd like 3 more of these losses in a row to lord over everybody how superior you guys are when others react to the losses despite being smart enough to know the Red Sox have a great team, have at it.
And yeah, I want a rental reliever but I'd want no part of the Fernando Rodney experience.

I dont understand Cora’s refusal to pinch hit. It's pathetic. You have your usual cleanup hitter on the bench in Moreland, and he's crushed Rodney in his career. But nope, gotta give him the full off day and send up scrubs instead, no matter how meaningful the situation.

I thought maybe he had some minor injury that was keeping him on the bench. Sheesh.

One loss when Mookie hit it on the button into a DP...one no game when we were up 5-0 and the rains came - and tonight - pen blows the lead and JBJ Ks with them loaded.
tough last few days...for sure. Let's get em tomorrow.

Let's get em tomorrow. They haven't caught a break lately. When things go well you get those breaks. When a cold streak is coming those things can go against you. Last night it looked like they'd be up 6 games. Now it's 4.5. And like you said they barely lost those last two games. They were agonizingly close. That's baseball. When the Sox win it won't be a squeaker. It will be a blowout victory.

Don't worry folks, Kelly is much better than half the relievers in the league according to some weird advanced metric. He'll be in the 8th inning soon enough.

The Twins announcers said Moreland wasn't on the bench in the 9th. I don't know what that was about.

The Twins announcers said Moreland wasn't on the bench in the 9th. I don't know what that was about. Cora was just asked if there was any thought about pinch hitting Moreland in the 9th - he said no. When asked if Moreland was healthy, he said yes. He said JBJ has been one of the best hitters the last month. He wasn't going to pinch hit for Holt either.

Tough few days but we have Sale going tomorrow.
Also, Cora said pre-game they stayed away from Moreland because of the field conditions so he’s probably banged up

The media is going to have a field day about why the Sox didn't get Britton. Ohh I can hear it already.

Don't worry. The Sox bullpen is beyond reproach. They don't need any help. We have Barnes and Hembree. This was Matt Barnes 43rd game of the season. He has given up a run in eight of those games. He struck out half the batters he faced tonight. If your expectations are for the Red Sox to acquire a reliever on the cheap - or even on the not-cheap, for that matter - who can be better than Barnes has been this year, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Relievers give up a hit and a walk in the same inning sometimes. It's okay to get lost in the moment, but there seems to be a big group who convince themselves that every time a reliever gives up a run that he stinks and should be replaced. It even happens with Kimbrel - those rare occasions he gives up a run, it's nothing but "he's a heart-attack closer, you can't trust him like in years past." If Matt Barnes giving up a second run this month is too much for you, and doing so in a game when he allowed one hit and struck out half the guys he faced, I dunno.

Heath Hembree faced 5 batters tonight, he threw 23 pitchs and 15 were strikes, batters swung at 12 of those and missed 4 times (SwnStrk% of 33%), he generated 1 soft liner (that went for a single) and 4 groundballs (2 of which went for singles). To resume: He threw strikes, missed bats and generated groundballs. That's good process, we might not like the results for tonight but we have to be encouraged by what you see. Tough luck loss...is all.

I didn't say the Sox need to do better than Barnes. I have said they need to have a high leverage reliever to go with Barnes and Kimbrel. I've watched the game for an awfully long time. I'm well aware that relievers aren't perfect, except for Koji in 2013. I've been pretty consistent in my position that they need another high leverage reliever - one that's a step up from Hembree. If they held onto the lead I would still feel the same way, and I suspect Dombrowski does too, despite what I think is his posturing. We'll know within the next five days.

Tough luck loss...is all. I have never cared for Hembree. It seems he pitches great in blowouts, but bring him in with a one run lead and he'll give up 2. That's how it's seemed for as long as he's been here (I know that's not literally always true, but it's how its always seemed). Tonight he gave up a hit on an extremely weak bloop that fell because of the shift and then another on a groundball that found a hole because of a hit and run. Then, the run scored on a double play. Again, not a Hembree fan, but that's just rotten luck for a Pitcher who was doing his job pretty well. Not going to rag on him tonight. And he's seemed pretty good overall lately as well.
