That's very helpful for the Sox. They just need a split of those 4 games.

That's why health is more important to me than new acquisitions. Righties 2 seamers inside to RHH is a scary thing to me every single time.

Coming into today, the Yankees were as close to being out of the playoffs as they were to winning the division. I don't see the Yankees falling out of the playoffs even with the Judge injury. It's for 3 weeks, not the remainder of the season. Not ideal for them. The Sox had a similar thing with Bogaerts early on. As it is they're 4.5 games out and they've solidified their pen (if they're worried about Chapman they now have Britton) and rotation as Happ is better than Cessa and the other kid who got demoted. I don't see the Yankees falling out of contention and they get to beat up on KC the next 3 days while the Sox play a team that plays them tough in Minnesota (wish they'd play that way against NY!). The Royals are abysmal. Bottom line is that Seattle has been damn lucky. If any team doesn't make the playoffs it's them. They've been breakeven in their runs scored/gainst numbers and are 20 games above .500. How long can that last? Maybe DiPoto makes some moves or something but if I were the M's I'd be concerned about Oakland. They're a tough team that's pretty underrated and they're a legit threat to pass Seattle.

Gary Sanchez' return is also not that Earth shattering, he's a 1 WAR player this year.

Unlikely but now I'd say more likely than the odds of them winning the division. It's not for three weeks, it's for at least three weeks. Besides a schedule with little time off, the Yankees not only have 10 games remaining with the team with the best record in baseball with 7 at Fenway, they also have to do a west coast road trip with 6 games against the A's and Mariners.

Some of ya'll are too much. It's one loss. Hembree got us out of a serious jam in the 6th when BJ left us with 2 on. Yeah, Hembree gave up a run in the 7th, but this one is on the offense...and the offense is amazing, so let's take a deep breath.

Yeah, Hembree gave up a run in the 7th, but this one is on the offense...and the offense is amazing, so let's take a deep breath. It's just the way you lost that game. Yeap means nothing in the context of 162, but it means a lot when you're trying to figure out what kind of identity your bullpen is trying to become. Matt Barnes is still your 8th inning guy no matter what, but who is behind him? Who can you really trust? I'm all for giving Brasier his shot and I was disappointed that he didn't get it yesterday. However Kelly and Pomeranz aren't good in the grand scheme of things. Hembree is well Hembree. Thornburg is a complete unknown and I don't know when Cora will ever go to him in a bigger situation. Brasier might be the one guy that turns it all around and gives everyone a more suited role, but who knows at this point? Price or Eovaldi is just going to have to go to the bullpen come playoff time. Eduardo needs to come back to full health in order for that to happen. That's the Sox best hope, unless there's a trade that cripples you for a bullpen upgrade. If anyone was looking to save good prospects, this game certainly didn't help your cause imo. You have a GM that isn't afraid to trade prospects and you are blowing leads to the Twins at home from the 7th inning on. It doesn't look good, even on paper. Maybe the Sox keep all the good prospects and don't get another arm, but Dombrowski is lurking and he's been searching for a real guy in the bullpen for a month now it seems (been reported that way at least). There's certainly not a marginal upgrade coming from within the system. Dombrowski has already basically come out and said that he isn't looking to rely on Lakins or Buttrey later in the season. I don't want to see Houck, Mata, Lakins and maybe even Groome traded certainly, but the chances just went way up that they could be now. People might believe me, who knows, maybe not. That's just my two cents on everything.

That's just my two cents on everything. You never say never, but chances Houck, Mata, or Groome get traded for a bullpen arm are very slim. That isn't DD way, he usually tries to trade guys who he thinks thier value has peaked. Look at Beeks, by all accounts he was traded when his value was high. Now Lakin or even Buttrey could be traded, you could argue they are sell high guys. A guy like Dalbec value has never been higher. Not saying I want to trade those guys, just that is typically how DD makes trades. Who was the last guy he traded who's value wasn't close to an all-time high at the time he was traded? So for me the top guys to worry about are Shawaryn, Ockimey, Dalbec, Chatham, Hernandez, Lakin, Buttrey, Poyner, Jerez, Crawford, and Diaz. They all seem to fit DD MO when it comes to trading guys.

It has been a tough few days and it was a tough loss last night but given the Sox record you have to realize they have won many more of those types of games than they have lost. The good thing is they have Sale going tonight and I like the chances of them ending this mini losing streak. That is what a stopper does.

This one is not on Barnes. He gave up one run. Our pen gave up 2 runs. You can't expect bullpen guys to be lights out every single time. You're not going to win hardly any games with 1 run.
If anything this one is on Cora for not pinch hitting for your the worst hitter with the bases loaded in the 9th, and leaving an all star who crushes Rodney on the bench.

Give Cora a break. Bradley has been hitting at a pretty solid clip, so I totally understand letting him hit in that spot. Onward and upward. We are fine. Get that W today.

BS... this team usually has big enough leads that the Bullpen guys don’t need to be lights out. It’s not unreasonable to expect Barnes to come thru if he’s the top bullpen guy people here portray him to be. No they can’t be lights out always but Barnes has yet to prove he can be counted on in big tight situations against decent to better teams. The Twins aren’t even that good and he couldn’t give one clean inning. Some people refuse to see this though and always have that excuse when he gives it up. Look at when he gives it up not just how often.

So every Red Sox relief pitcher should have clean innings 100% of the time against the Twins or else he's no good? Those are huge expectations.
The blame tonight - and for most nights since the all-star break - has been the offense as a whole. Start scoring runs like they were and all will be fine.

I'm a bit surprised at this take here since your posts about the Celtics are super insightful but come on man, Barnes is one of the best set-up men in the MLB and he gave up one run. Kimbrel blew a save against the Royals earlier in the season, unfortunately, at a game I was at. It happens.

You can't make a trade for every bad performance or even every injury. Next man up.

Don’t be, I want Barnes to succeed but I’ve gone thru his game logs and looked at situations and it doesn’t give me comfort at all. Go check them out. They cause me to watch all these situations more closely and I expect a greater level of success from him in these situations if we are going to be comfortable counting on him in October. Admittedly, he has a smaller sample size in these spots but that’s what we have to work with and the initial trends don’t make me feel good. If that’s too empty for you, I’m sorry but it’s what we got. I’ll look at them again later in more depth. Maybe I’ll feel better after doing so. To be continued.
