Offering Kimbrel a QO would be worth it, even if its a 1 year overpay. Next year is the least year we will have all our guys before a bunch start hitting free agency. Then we can reset the cap after the 2019 season.

Yeah, that wouldn't even be a one-year overpay. Kimbrel's going to get something like 4/$70, and that's assuming he doesn't end up getting a fifth year.

Then we can reset the cap after the 2019 season. No brainer offering Kimbrel. 0% chance he takes it. So it means either a new contract or a pick. If he did take it, great. It means one more year with closer settled.

...and for anyone wondering, a comp pick for Kimbrel leaving would be a pick after the 4th round. (Random thought -- could be a pick to grab your favorite senior sign like Granberg for 50k and spread the remaining ~350k elsewhere).

Kimbrel or more specifically the closer position is the biggest decision the Sox have to make this off season.

I think 18 million for a closer is a lot, and closers in general are overpriced, even for a team with our resources. Maybe for our specific case of 2019 it isn't an overpay just due to our current situation with the contracts and the fact our team is otherwise pretty set, but in most cases it would be, in my opinion. Small market teams like Oakland and the Padres regularly develop their own closers and then sell them at a mark up on the trade market.

In terms of $/WAR 18 million is likely to be less than what Kimbrel is worth next year. If it was that easy to develop a great closer there would be a lot more of them out there. The Red Sox would LOVE to grow their own, and are certainly trying to, it's just hard. Just like it's tough to find a dominant player at every other position.

Feeling good about this series...I think we are about to have some big offense games on the roadtrip.
On a sad note...shame Remy has to go yet another round with cancer. The Yankee games with he and Eck both in the booth were priceless.

Sale is starting Sunday. So who else starts Saturday other than Price?

Price and Sale on Sat, then Pom on Sunday would seem to be a better fit

Ok. No actual damage, but certainly not a “clean “ inning for Drew Pomeranz. If the dugout/bullpen used a pay phone, Cora would need a lot of quarters.

Well, the good news is that Pomeranz is really close to the zone on every pitch but 2 so far, even with 2 walks. The ump hasn't done him any favors either, not calling any borderline pitch a strike.

I'm guessing they will call up Cuevas which would keep the rotation stretched plus, he has more experience against minor league teams. Using Sale on Friday would also allow them to use Johnson against Philly.

I'm gonna start referring to Pomeranz as Drew-K.

There is no way Pom’s elbow is heavy. Did he really just throw an 84-mile an hour fb?

I am so done with Pomeranz. Can’t even imagine how he’d benefit in the bullpen as he’s not got the control of the past and walking virtually a man an inning, if not more.

I lost the zone right before TJ surgery. It’s time to DL him for the season, I fear.

Now the ump is giving Pomeranz some calls. He probably wants the game to end.

He obviously took something off it to try to throw a strike because he threw 91 a few pitches later.
