In other news, today is actually Duran Duran Appreciation Day. I am not making this up. So, appreciate Duran Duran. And Jarren Duran.

Esteban Quiroz is on a rehab assignment with the GCL squad. Miguel Suero also promoted from the DSL to the GCL.

Interesting that the article says Mata will add a slider or cutter to his arsenal next year.

Kind of ticked that Lakins didn't get love in that article. The kid has barely been touched since becoming a reliever.

Pedro Castellanos is one of my favorite prospects in the system. He’s gotten hot this past month. One of the most intriguing pieces of his game that was mentioned in the article is his bat to ball skills combined with untapped raw power. He’s still only striking out 13% of the time in his first season out of rookie ball. If he can combine that with his raw power, then he has the chance to become a real prospect. On the other hand, he needs to walk more than he does and he runs the risk of not having a defensive presence a la Josh Ockimey.

I’m all for a big guy making consistent contact... but asking him to drastically change his launch angle and walk 4x as often seems like a lot.

I’m saying he has a ton of raw power that’s not present in his game right now. That may change with time. I don’t like forcing guys away from what works to increase their launch angle. That’s what caused Travis’s crappy start to the year. Castellanos can tap into his power with a line drive swing. As far as walks, Pedro’s got a 2.6% walk rate in Greenville this year. That’s just not going to cut it.

The scouting report on him at SP is lagging a bit behind at the moment.

Terrific start by Thad Ward in Lowell tonight. He’s pitched well so far...not fantastic, but he’s limiting runs and baserunners reasonably well, and he’s got pretty good stuff. I read post-draft that he tops out in the 96 range (works right around 93), and I think he could be a guy similar to Shawaryn, who was also a fifth-rounder. Shawaryn seems a little more likely to become a Gene Nelson RH relief assassin with that near-sidearm and nasty slider, but I like both as potential backend starters/swingmen who might develop enough feel or their secondaries/command to squeak into #3 territory. That’s really valuable especially for a team like the Sox with the financial resources to pay a genuine ace.
My guy Tanner Nishioka has another solid night and is doing his .300/.400/.500 thing in Greenville. Huge fan. He is my dark horse binky.
Good to see Chavis heating up. The power’s still there, he’s hitting well and the IsoD looks great. Still a few too many Ks but the time off probably worsens that. And really, it’s not like his K rate is “troublesome.” It would be great to see him finish strong and have a big AFL season. Start next year in AAA and shove early. He could be extremely valuable both on the team or as a trade piece, if he’s showing big power, OBP, and an improved hit tool. He dropped off top-100s but could easily jump back on, and move top-65/70.
Dalbec is being Dalbec. We’ll see where that leads. And Duran had an unheard of 0-5 and is still hitting nearly .400 in Greenville.
And Austin Rei keeps chugging along under the radar, looking like he might end up a serviceable or better MLB backup.

Greenville scores 10 runs on 14 hits - 13 of which were singles. Their lone xbh in the game - a 2B by Nishioka. And as philsbosoxfan pointed out, none of them from Jarren Duran, on Duran Duran Appreciation Day.

Not getting defensive, just curious what you think isn't up-to-date about his report. Yeah, I’m not trashing the report or the updating procedures here. I base my claim on just simple memory; I don’t remember it changing any time recently. But more importantly, the report talks about a lot of swing in miss in his game. He had a K% under 10% in rookie ball and in his first full season in Greenville it’s at 13.7%. Statistically it just doesn’t add up to me. The report matches up more with the video from last year’s spring training and the ugly swing pictured there.

Ah. gotcha.
Haven't updated since we saw him in the spring, but he's probably one of the next ones for us to get to.
