With the GCL season in the books, Nick Northcut and Brandon Howlett were promoted to Lowell.

Santana, Shugart, Marrero, Abreu and Aybar were also taken off the GCL roster along with Northcutt and Howlett

And it might be notable that Decker was never actually assigned to the GCL, he was sent to Lowell and then put on a rehab assignment. Or he might be on to instructs.

MLB battery in Portland tonight, Erod throwing to Christian Vazquez. Eduardo not nearly as sharp through two innings as he was last week.
A hit, a walk, 41 pitches, 24 strikes.
Dalbec 1-1, first inning single.

Erod done after four. 76 pitches. Nothing where he had to move off the mound to test the ankle. Not as sharp as last week but fanned 6 and allowed two hits, two walks. Looks like Vazquez has another inning behind the plate. He’s driven in three with a sac fly and a bases loaded single.
Jantzen Witte, a three run homer.
7-0 Portland

I’ve tried to go easy on Ball, and I feel bad for him, but what do they do with him? Does he go somewhere over the winter to play OF? I feel like every time he pitches ther are lots of hits and runs.

I seem to remember him being regarded as a 2/3 round pick as an OF, so a reasonable timeframe for him would have him in MLB at 26 (if he does well) or 27. He could still certainly carve out a career for himself. I think they oughta give him that chance, because it’s def never happening on the mound.

Chatham still has an ops of only .750 despite the gaudy average. Doesn't walk or hit for power.

He’s a big kid, and he’s hit for a little bit more power in the past. I don’t mean he’s going to be a some slugger, but it’ll go up, I think.

He's also a legit shortstop. A legit shortstop who can hit .300--even an empty .300--is semi-interesting, especially in this system which doesn't really have middle infielders. Deven Marrero had a similar profile with 30 points less of batting average, and he's an up-and-down type who contributed to an MLB playoff team. His ability to come in last season and bridge the gap from the Sandoval disaster to the Devers era was pretty key. I'm not sure Chatham is quite as good as Marrero defensively, but there's a major leaguer there.
EDIT: It's also worth noting that Marrero was ranked 16th in the system headed into 2014, then 11th after his strong 2014 season at Portland, and he had a bit more power projection than Chatham, AND was a better defender. Chatham's the system's current #8 prospect and he's a guy I like, but him being in the top-10 really does say something about the depth. He's more like the player we typically see in like the #12-18 range.

There's no winter league that would make sense for him. But yeah, I'm dead serious that I think he's an outfielder at Instructs, or spring training at the latest.

He's more like the player we typically see in like the #12-18 range. This is why I think Lin is so underrated. He’s only a year older, has shown some ability to take a walk and hit for at least gap power, and he’s superior defensively at SS and has shown excellent defense at 3b. His season this year (and he’s also been healthier throughout his career) is basically best-case for Chatham, maybe even above that.

I wasn’t sure if there was something like the VZ (not that anyone would want to go there rn) lower level league where he might get reps. Def hope you’re right re: instructs tho. The sooner the better for all concerned.

Honestly, facing the pitchers there might not even be very helpful. It's worse than the GCL.
