Drove in the game winning rbi with an RBI double in his first professional AB for the sea dogs.

Meanwhile, Braden Shipley, RHP, has had 122 pro ABs since being drafted just after Trey Ball. And he can't hit a lick.
Yes, NL teams let pitchers swing the bat.
No reason Ball shouldn't have DHed once per week for the past 5 years

It's about time. Rooting for Trey as a hitter. Good luck young man. I wonder where they will start him as a outfielder next year? High A ball maybe?

This was long overdue as he was obviously going nowhere as a major league pitcher. He likely won't become much of a big league hitter either but you never know.

Chris or one of the other mods would probably recall for sure but wasn't Ball seen as a 1st round pick even if he was just an outfielder ?

I have been away and am just getting back on the site catching up. This is the first Pedro contribution I have seen and I had to stop and say welcome back my friend, made my day. Even if you are a pain in the arse sometimes!!

Speier discussed this a month ago: And so, over the last several weeks, Ball’s pregame routine has included more than just getting ready to pitch. He also has been jumping in the cage with the Double A Portland Sea Dogs, taking hacks during batting practice. Get 108 Stitches in your inbox: Everything baseball every Monday-Friday during baseball season, and weekly in the offseason. "This isn’t the turn on the road map that is certain to have Ball convert to a position player, but the Red Sox also haven’t ruled it out. “It’s definitely not a conversion at this time,” said Red Sox vice president of player development Ben Crockett. “There’s still good things with his stuff. “He’s been taking [batting practice] for a while. He continues to pitch. That’s kind of how we mapped it out for him — more exploratory than anything else. We’re still kind of in that initial stage at this point." ... "The Red Sox and Ball are still trying to figure out what might click, and how to give the former top pick his best chance to get to the big leagues. Five years into it, Ball’s career represents a venture into what could be a fascinating unknown." www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2018/08/02/red-sox-consider-having-former-top-pick-explore-different-side-ball/zTcMkb94pIkKaBHAVlxTuL/story.html

Red Sox plan to use Trey Ball exclusively as an outfielder for the instructional league this year. Will assess based on how that goes.
