Man, that looked lie Benny might have beaten it if he didn't slide.

Why pinch run now?

I don't know what Bogey said to the ump to make him laugh before his at bat there, but I'd like to think it was a factor in the ump not calling strikes on those outside pitches that he's otherwise been calling all game.

WOW. Unbelieveable!
Playoff baseball. Gotta love it though it sure brings on acid indigestion!

Wasn't pretty, but we'll take it.
But, how does that LF NOT dive for that ball? Oh well.

No, he should of pinch hit when X was up. But a WIN is a WIN!

He wasn't scalding the ball, but nice to see some production from Moreland tonight.

98 wins with 18 to play. 8.5 game lead over MFY. Some breather games coming up....loving it! Magic number 11.
But we gotta fix this bullpen thing.

No, he should of pinch hit when X was up. But a WIN is a WIN! Assuming you mean pinch run, the thought is to not take your best bat out of the game on the chance you get a double with 2 outs. If you run there, it has to be because you thin you can steal a base, but Maldonado is kind of tough to run on.

Thought Gonzalez could've caught that -- but made the wrong decision. Thanks Marwin!!
Re Bogie and what Matt said above -- that is very interesting. The game within the game. Smart! Wonder if Cora/coaching staff mediated that one.

Give it up to Cora, he got on the ump. If you noticed he started calling balls on Xander. Good win.

Glad they won. You can't feel good about this series if you're the Sox. Cora got exposed in this game imo. Brian Johnson isn't a loogy. Hembree isn't a magician with runners on base. Vazquez isn't a pinch hitting option at all, even for a terrible hitting Leon.

"worse bet than just letting Nunez put a ball in play."
Agreed. Blake hitting from the right in that situation...not a good move.
It wasn't luck that won this but it was probably a fortuitous call (I think it was safe at home) on a bad throw by Boegarts. But very happy to win one this weekend and think about some things that probably need to change (strategy wise) later.

Lots happened in this game - the box score, esp for the pitchers, doesn't begin to tell the story.
The good - Mookie, Benny, JDM, Xander, Moreland, Nunez all good games at the plate - JDM now has 1967 Yaz-like stat line, and Mookie is marching to a 10 WAR. Moreland with the big hit. Porcello was fine and probably should have been left in to get the third out in the 6th. Wright was fine in relief, and Kimbrel rocked.
The bad - lifting Porcello, putting in Hembree and Johnson, PHing Vazquez and Swihart. Pearce, Phillips and Leon were a pretty big bottom of the order black hole. Hembree - arrrggh.
But - we won. We didn't get swept. And we now have Toronto and the Mets at Fenway. Two away from 100 wins and the MFY lost.

Vazquez isn't a pinch hitting option at all, even for a terrible hitting Leon. a manager doesn't get exposed because of one game. I agree on Hembree, but the bullpen is a mess at the moment (and btw, he should get some credit for going to Wright who kept it scoreless for a few innings). And I didn't love all his PH calls but some worked out perfect like Mitch and Holt. I don't think Cora had a great game, but he was hardly exposed.

I don't think Cora is a bad manager overall, but he has some dumb quirks to him. This Hembree crap needs to end. He won't start Swihart because the dumb personal catcher thing that he said he wouldn't do at the beginning of the year. The bullpen stinks but you can't bring in Johnson in high leverage there. That is inexcusable.
