The US Department of Justice is investigating the Dodgers and Braves for possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in connection with their recruitment and signing of international free agents. This could have broad implications for both organizations, as well as individuals who could go to jail. Who knows how far this will go across MLB. The Dodgers even rated their employees on their level of egregious activities, including 5 individuals whose activities were deemed criminal. Not exactly the headlines MLB was looking for as the 2018 post-season begins. This baseball underbelly might soon be exposed. Sports Illustrated has learned that the U.S. Department of Justice has begun a sweeping probe into possible corruption tied to the recruitment of international players, centered on potential violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. What’s more, SI has learned that multiple alleged victims of smuggling and human trafficking operations have already given evidence to law enforcement agents or testified before a federal grand jury.
“We had heard there was an investigation coming,” says one top baseball official. “But we didn’t know it was a DOJ matter. I don’t want to speculate, but, yeah, this could get interesting.”www.si.com/mlb/2018/10/02/fbi-investigation-mlb-atlanta-braves-los-angeles-dodgers

Maybe that plan to make John Coppolella the fall guy didn't work.

It will be interesting to see how far back and how wide this DOJ investigation goes. Some parties may do jail time, never mind the broader impact to the Braves, Dodgers and possibily other teams which get sweeped into this investigation.

I wonder if it will have been a blessing to get "caught" by MLB earlier than anyone else.

I highly doubt what we got was a blessing, effectively wiping out two international classes. I'd love to see the punishment that makes that look like a blessing.

At this point "the blessing" is that we aren't being investigated currently.

At this point "the blessing" is that we aren't being investigated currently. Based on the article it is not clear how far and wide this investigation is going. I think it is a fools errand to presume that the Braves and Dodgers are the only teams under investigation with respect to the DOJ investigation.

Edit: here is a discussion of the applicable statute of limitations. The article notes several instances where the government charges extended to conduct over a decade earlier. www.traceinternational.org/blog/717/FCPA_Statute_of_Limitations_When_are_bygones_really_gone

Winner of the NLDS gets a lesser punishment?

Winner of the NLDS gets a lesser punishment? This is serious $h!t now that control of the story has left the MLB playpen and migrated to the Justice Dept whiping post. The stuff they have on the Dodgers is going to cause heads to roll, and with SI getting hold of the goods, the escape hatches are closing. No way this gets slipped under the owners' rug with those emails being aired in public. FOs have gone off the rails what with the Cardinals hacking the Astros ...and now this.

I just hope this thing gets settled in a way where rules aren't going to be changed in the CBA, unless it's for the better of the game. That and I obviously hope the Sox don't get their organization tied to this. They just their spending rights back again two years ago and then this pops up.

It may end with an international draft and strict draft slot bonuses (like football).
