Carson Smith elects FA, Haley and Renda outrighted

Does Carson Smith have a actual opt out in his minor league deal?
I think he gets called up either way once he's fully healthy, whenever that is. No language came out from reports about a opt out. Would be nice to control him for a little while to see what he looks like before making rash decisions on a one or two month rehab stint because of a opt out clause.

Carson Smith: derelict Eduardo Rodriguez: Heat of the moment in a big gameAnd yes, I recall the Smith comment not sounding nearly as bad in context as well, although I'm not 100 percent certain. We all know it should not even have come to that....so, you can add in the next line, Alex Cora: brain fart

I think he was practically kicking himself the moment the ball left the yard. He let the general stats (Puig doesn't hit lefties well) dictate his decision over what his eyes were telling me (E-Rod is losing it, velocity is down, needs to come out - Barnes should be in the game). And I think he instinctually knew it wasn't the right call. The good news is it made the win all the more dramatic and the comeback demoralized and finished off the Dodgers. Cora will never be perfect (who is?), but I think he'll learn from these situations. He's already an awesome manager, but I do think he has the ability to learn from mistakes and adapt and be even better.

You could argue it wasn't a mistake as well because remember what shape the bullpen was in. Everyone knew it was the right time to take him out at that point, including Cora. But as you said Puig is just plain bad against LHP and he just as easily could have gotten that last out and save the bullpen one more inning. My biggest problem is that ERod's final statistical line just doesn't match how awesome that start was. They needed that more than anything that game and ERod delivered more than we could have ever hoped for.

My biggest problem is that ERod's final statistical line just doesn't match how awesome that start was. They needed that more than anything that game and ERod delivered more than we could have ever hoped for. Cora had Barnes warming earlier in the inning. Afterward Cora said he was in the dugout pleading with his guys "to pick him up". In the press conference he said he should have pulled him before he got to Puig. The pen wasn't in the greatest of shape, but it was still manageable at that point. Only Eovaldi wasn't available. Fortunately the Dodgers were way too conservative and it cost them the Series ultimately. First the Roberts/Hill miscommunication and then the flat-out refusal to let Urias come into the game when the Sox had the catcher's spot and pitcher's spot due and had JBJ, Moreland, Devers, Swihart, and Kinsler on the bench - 4 guys who are lefty with Kinsler as the only RH threat (and he wasn't that big a threat) and their refusal to let Baez pitch. That decision was made beyond Roberts but then Roberts didn't have Wood ready to face Devers when the catcher's spot came up in the order again, so Devers had the righty Floro to hit against. E-Rod was awesome that game and gave them necessary length. His fastball velocity was decreasing in the 6th - think he went from 95 MPH to 91 MPH. I was wondering when E-Rod would finally get a chance to have some impact on the post-season.

This is why I posted that I thought Smith would miss most of the 2019 season. Hey if he bounced back sooner than expected, then great. All the power to Carson Smith for coming back sooner than expected. It sounded ominous at the time, but if he's getting invited to big league camp, then I guess it's not so bad? I'm trying to remember if they've invited guys to camp knowing they're hurt before. Obviously guys on the 40 are in camp whether or not they're hurt. In theory, it could be "you need to rehab, we'll bring you in on a minor league deal although you'll be rehabbing in MLB camp, then Pawtucket" or something like that? www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2019/01/02/red-sox-give-carson-smith-minor-league-deal-and-spring-invite/8GBE3bxJ4tsmGwepOsyI0L/story.html

Turns out he was hurt after all. He might be out all of 2019 too.
"The result was a subluxation that needed surgery, and the prognosis is a 12-18 month recovery period."

So... that article is missing something, right? Unless I'm wrong about this (and please, doctors in the house, tell me if I am), you don't get surgery to fix a subluxation - you get one because they find the subluxation had an underlying and surgery-needing cause. Given the 12-18 month recovery period, it sounds like he had rotator cuff or labrum surgery.

Miley had a 5+ ERA in the AL West the year after the trade and somehow we still got ripped off even in hindsight. That trade will be a funny one to recall in 5-10 years. Mariners may have thought they were getting a solid 4 or even a 3, and the Sox thought they had their setup man.

Strange question. Why did they sign him then? To be nice?

Strange question. Why did they sign him then? To be nice? Smith. If Sox add him back to 40-man before November, they control him for 2020. At low cost. He won't be a free agent, in that case, until Nov 2021.
