Stop me if you heard this one, but Brentz struck out a lot (31.3%), hit for a ton of power (.580 slg, .316 ISO), and missed a bunch of time due to injury (55 gp, not counting rehab assignment; was out from 5/7 to 7/28) with the Mets in AAA last year.

He also started the season with 6 singles and a walk in 41 PA. He then hit .294 / .372 / .693 in 153 PA, despite missing all the time time in the middle. He only made contact 100 times in that stretch, and had 15 homers and 16 2B.
I love it. I still think he can hit in MLB.

It seems like a tough fit for him - his path to even a backup role isn't obvious, because with Martinez on board and two first basemen they aren't going to keep a corner guy. But if he's comfortable with the organization and coaches, then more power to him. Happy to have him back.

I really don't understand Brentz' logic here. There aren't too many teams in baseball that he'd have less a shot at breaking camp with.
ADD: There's also the factor that Holt, Lin & Swihart can also play in the outfield.

Who knows what other considerations there are. If you're a fringe player with 2 pct chance of playing in the majors on a regular basis, do you want to move across the country to increase that chance to 4 pct, perhaps having to sell your home and bringing your wife and kids with you (I have no idea if Brentz has a wife and kids)?

If you think you have a reasonable shot, yes, unless you are content with the minors. The other variable we don't know though is what pay the Sox are willing to go while he's in the minors.

Brentz should learn 1B and compete with Sam Travis as next bat up.

Agreed that this, like Gorkys, is another case of a strange fit. It reinforces my belief that the Red Sox might be paying premiums to MLFAs to stock Pawtucket with depth. Honestly, on the offensive side, there wasn't going to be much depth there to start the year, especially if you're low on Ockimey and Travis. It was basically Lin and Chavis.

Maybe we need to ask the question the other way: How many major league rosters would he have a non-negligible chance to crack, either immediately or eventually? Maybe no other organization was going to give him either much compensation OR much hope of being on the major league roster. So if his only real hope of a significant MLB exposure was a series of serious injuries, which can't be predicted, why not go with the Sox?

Brentz should learn 1B and compete with Sam Travis as next bat up. This may be the plan. If you can play 1B, you are not blocked by anyone beginning in 2020.
Last year in AAA Brentz's HR/Contact rate, after his ice-cold start in a new organization, was 3.2 times as high as Travis's. It was 2.0 times what Chavis did across two levels.
