I have to say that I am very intrigued by Workman simply because of his great k/bb ratios. Trying to think of a comparison I came up with Rafael Betancourt. He and Workman both put up great k/bb ratios while being old for their leagues and while underwhelming scouts. It will be interesting to see if he can uphold his 4+/1 k/bb ration in the upper minors. I'm thinking his floor may be of an effective, cost-controlled bullpen arm for the foreseeable future (not unlike Betancourt's early years in the Majors). .

The guy I'm really interested in this year is Keith Couch. 48th ranked prospect- under the radar because he's a sinker ballet that doesn't throw all that hard, but its not soft either. Great K/BB rates. Excited to see him at AA.

I'm always happy to see my main man Couch getting some love, even in unrelated threads. Get in on the bandwagon, there's still plenty of room.

I'm very intrigued by Workman for the sheer fact that when he was drafted out of Texas I remember thinking that if he can naturally progress through the system and hit on the development points that were called out in initial scouting reports (developing another pitch, reliable breaking pitch), he could stick as a starter.
I feel like I just recently read that he hasnt' been allowed to throw his cutter still yet in pro ball (I know this was true initially, was it still the case through at least majority of 2012 season?), and when he was at Texas that was considered his most reliable and effective pitch (albeit maybe to the point of being a crutch?). It will be interesting to see it getting worked back into the mix now that he's diversified his arsenal. Does anyone have additional info here on how his secondary offerings, his 4-seam vs his cutter, and how his aresenal grades out/scouts?

I thought he was not allowed to throw the cutter in year one,bu that he threw it a ton last year.

I wrote on Workman after talking to him. He talked a little about the cutter. I know people that saw him last year thought it was a very important pitch for him in that it allowed him to get quick outs on the ground, and keep his pitch count down by not constantly having to go deep in counts. news.soxprospects.com/2013/01/workman-looking-to-build-on-breakout.html

Is the slider that the Fangraphs article praises actually his cut fastball? The SoxProspects scouting report makes no mention of a slider and, as far as I know, Workman has been utilizing his cut fastball quite a bit this year (i.e. he hasn't been told not to throw it like last year). Or is the "slider" really his curveball? The article mentioned 11-5 break.

The description he's giving sounds like it matches up more closely with Mellen's scouting report of his curve - solid two plane break, inconsistency with the control, etc. I wish Sussman had provided a pitch speed though.

The question people posted in the Travis Shaw thread is the only question I have with Workman: He IS old for his level. Since I never came close to seeing him live, I don't know what to think about him.

Since I never came close to seeing him live, I don't know what to think about him. True - for a prospect, he's old for AA. That said, with this level of performance, and seeing as he clearly has fans in the FO (evidenced by the late ST start), I suspect he'll be in PAwtucket at an age appropriate level before Memorial day.

I agree with Q. Another 5-7 starts at similar performance levels should force a promotion to AAA. By then, the Red Sox will have found a spot for him in the AAA rotation.

I don't know. Workman still only has 8 appearances and 43 innings at Double-A, with a 3.56 ERA. My guess is the Red Sox will want him to get around 20 starts and/or 100-120 innings before they decide to bump him up. I'd lean toward a promotion around the All-Star break.
I'm excited about any pitcher with his K/BB rates though.

He only had 113 IP in Salem before getting promoted. I think we can start looking for him to get the bump around 100 IP. Would match guys like Hernandez.
