Hope the players' wives are ok. This is scary.

Concerned. I don't normally pay comment on reporters but I have a real problem with Abraham "stay tuned". Maybe I am taking out of context, but that doesn't seem necessary here.

Another site lists Romel as his brother. So he is at least considered to be like a brother. Blake was scratched as catcher today and gone home. Thoughts and prayers for the family.

Well, that's rotten. As the resident Swihart nay-sayer... A) I always thought he was a good prospect and I always wanted him to succeed B) that he has not succeeded I think is largely the result of a run of bad luck and possibly bad player dev decisions beyond his control C) you're always glad to be proven wrong on your pessimistic projections, but it would be a particular joy to be made a fool of by Swihart this year.

If that's the case, then I hope it's with the Red Sox and not another team instead. Terrible news about his brother. Way, way too young. Awful.

FWIW, Chavis hit his 3rd 3-run HR of the spring in a 7-6 loss. Not sure how they fit him in without an injury but at some point this season I would anticipate seeing him in Boston. Interesting to see how his defense at 1b and 2b come along this season.

I don't think 2b is a good option. He is not known for his defense. In fact, Dalbec seems to be better defensively. At only 5'10" 1B could be a problem. On the other hand, he is such a good hitter they have to find somewhere for him to play. I'm thinking the only practical place is 3b. Move Devers to 1b. Devers is not the greatest 3rd baseman, but his hitting keeps him in the lineup somewhere. Tough decision.
Down the road they might convert him to an outfielder. If they lose one of their current outfielders, he could be their replacement. Then there's Dalbec, who is at least a year away. If JD opps out next year, that could solve the problem. One way or the other, we have a great group of hitters for a long time to come.

Today's line up - it's beginning to look a lot more like regular season (still awaiting a Pedey and JDM sighting), six Bs in a row!
Hector Velazquez will start for Boston.
Red Sox lineup:
1. Andrew Benintendi LF
2. Mookie Betts RF
3. Jackie Bradley Jr. CF
4. Xander Bogaerts SS
5. Brock Holt 2B
6. Blake Swihart DH
7. Christian Vázquez C
8. Bobby Dalbec 3B
9. Josh Ockimey 1B

One way or the other, we have a great group of hitters for a long time to come. Chavis might wind up not being much of a 2b. That's quite possible, but given that he was drafted as a SS, it wouldn't hurt to try him at 2b and see what he can do. The Sox will most likely have a major need at 2b soon, if not now. I don't think it's a huge deal that he's only 5-10 for a 1b. Pearce did fine at 1b and he isn't that tall. That said, Chavis is inexperienced at 1b too. However I would not move Devers over to 1b to make room for Chavis. Devers' defense was bad only due to inexperience, not due to skill. Devers has the makings of a solid 3b. He just needs more experience. His bat was ahead of his defense (like Chavis) but they could no longer keep Devers down in the minors. He's kind of learning on the fly. Chavis' future with the Sox is most likely 1b in 2020 as they will need a cost effective option at 1b to help balance out extensions and pay raises. I don't anticipate Moreland and Pearce coming back and I would anticipate Chavis' bat will force him into the majors at some point soon. They'll expose him to 2b because it's a need. That's really the big learning experience for him this year. Playing defensively at 1b and 2b to see if he can be a legit option there in the majors. It's possible he gets exposed to corner OF for when either Betts or Bradley leave. Of course there's another possibility - that he gets traded at some point this year. If not I think Chavis can man 1b until Triston Casas is ready several years down the road.

Chavis could also get some AB's at DH. It's quite possible JDM opts out after this season and the Sox don't re-sign him.

Especially if Pedroia will need a lot of off days, they can try rotating JD, Pedroia, and Chavis as DH. It’s not like you want JD in the field too often, but some lineup shimmying will work things out. Edit: I forgot we (obviously) have Pearce and Nunez, on top of Holt... some roster moves will need to be made to accomodate Chavis, of course, but I’m just excited to see what he’ll do in the majors.

I said this on the podcast recently, but it probably takes at least two injuries to get Chavis on the roster and into the lineup this year (if they need a guy for a week, they're going to call up Travis or Lin). This roster is constructed for Nunez and Holt to get at-bats, along with both 1B, etc. One guy going down isn't going to create playing time for a call-up, especially because of the positional flexibility - all three OFs can play CF, the DH can play OF, Nunez and Holt alone cover pretty much any position. The one exception might be Bogaerts, were he to suffer a long-term injury, in which case if Lin were playing well he might come up and into significant playing time.

I didn't even want to consider the DH possibility, but yes if JD Martinez leaves after this year then Chavis could wind up the DH. I just hope it doesn't come to that. I'd much rather see Chavis playing 1b or even if need be 2b in 2020 than DHing. Guys who can mash like JDM are really hard to find. He gave them exactly what David Ortiz had been giving the Red Sox all those years. I'd hate to do without it. While Chavis is a bat I think that can eventually hit 25 homers and carry a .260 BA with a .325 OBP and .475 SA, I wouldn't want to lose JDM to find that out. I'd gamble losing Moreland and Pearce (as much as I like them) at 1b, though.

I think he could replace Pearce if he gets hurt for a month or something to platoon with Moreland and be a pinch hitter. I'd have to think he's passed Travis as an option by now.

Even early in spring training, Scherzer can deal. Wow.

Same thing if JD Martinez wound up on the DL. Either Chavis platoons with Moreland and Pearce gets DH ABs or more likely and more simply Chavis would get the DH ABs. I guess they could get by with Moreland hitting the bench against lefties (instead of against righties where they could simply DH Pearce and keep Moreland at 1b) and DHing Nunez, but that's a huge power dropoff.

Dalbec isn't known for patience but he's looked pretty selective in his ST at-bats. Is this a recent development or just a small sample?

Dalbec isn't known for patience but he's looked pretty selective in his ST at-bats. Is this a recent development or just a small sample? He's absolutely known for his patience. Second in the system in walks last year, behind only Ockimey. Arguably I'd say he's too patient, getting into too many pitcher's counts, which is part of the reason the strikeouts are so high.

I wonder if his time in spring training with JDM and Pedey and others will help be a bit more aggressive with his pitch and/or in nhis zone earlier in the count this year. That might be big deal for him - if he can strike the right balance.

JBJ might be too good to bat 9th much longer if his new swing continues to take.
If Devers takes the next step the Sox will be much better from the left side of the plate - he could even wind up the #3 hitter before the year is up.
Even with human regressions from superhumans Betts and JDM this offense might be even better this season. Just hope they stay healthy and the bullpen can keep their leads.
