Thornburg has an option. No need to "get rid of" him. According to a MassLive article, Dombrowski said Thornburg is out of options and they are unable to send him to AAA, unless he's on rehab. ThornburgSomething has changed then. Going into the season, we had him at 1 option.

This homerun problem just won't go away. Get used to it, the ball is flying. Highest home runs per game rate ever this season. I don't blame MLB for trying to get more offense in the game without destroying the player's bodies with steriods. The Sox need to find a better job of containing it. They're one of the 3 worst teams at it. MLB knows that homeruns drew the fans back after the strike years and they're trying to get that back. Players like Verlander even acknowledged it last year that the baseball is juiced. MLB wants the ball juiced.

Either Thonrburg or Brewer has to go to AAA if Holt and Johnson are healthy simultaneously.
Meanwhile, Thornburg and Brasier have about the same xwOBA (I'll have the updated figures tomorrow). It's way too soon to conclude that Thornburg isn't good enough, but Brewer has been much better so far.
I’m encouraged by Thornburg, actually. I’d prefer that, with Lin, they drop Nunez. Though tbh that would probably come back to bite them. Seems to me that Thornburg’s issue is almost entirely command. He’s goving up hard contact with good stuff, but he’s also still getting whiffs. I think they’d be best-served to hold onto him for a bit and see if the rust shakes off. He’s basically showing pre-TO-surgery stuff, and his control/command have improved since ST. He’d almost certainly have more trade value than Nunez. And I think Nunez would be easier to replace should the need arise (Lin, for one...but on the trade market, too). I’ve got a bad feeling that, with his CB looking excellent, if the Sox got rid of Thornburg, he’d rediscover his mojo pretty quickly. I don’t think it’s far off. Brewer has been a *find*. Thornburg has a better fastball than last year, but it was getting smoked in the beginning of spring training. His offspeed is still really good, but I don't know if he'll have the consistency to make it in by the end of the year.

Andrew Cashner vs. JD Martinez is something I'd like to watch

Apparently if you have a 0-50 something slump, Rick Porcello is the guy you want to face.

Nice to put a nice twist on it from my perspective. You'd like to think there might be a good reason behind it, even though we know it is for mostly viewership. You're more likely right though.

I just really hope this isn't one of those 5 ERA years for Porcello. Still early, but yeesh.

What happens when you keep on nibbling and throwing curves 3 times in a row... Porcello has to do that or else the homers become a bigger problem. And this ump is giving him absolutely nothing which is BS.

This might need to be a game where the pen is up early - I really hope Cora doesn’t just let him keep loading the bases and tempting fate. We’re at the point where we need to ensure we win some games and not try to let him find his footing at the expense of giving up too many runs.

I haven't watched every pitch of this game, but I have seen at least 5 pitches touching the strike zone square called a ball so far with nothing borderline going his way.
