Shawaryn would line up to pitch in the majors on 5/21, which is an opening if the Red Sox are inclined to keep Sale and Rodriguez on four days of rest.

Oscar Hernandez was hit on the hand with a pitch, and was replaced by Centeno the following inning.
Watched Shawaryn on Milb.TV and it was a bittersweet game for him. 5+ innings with a career high 6 walks, but his 2 seam fastball was really strong today, and had weak contact (2 hits) all game until Trayce Thompson hit a home run off of him to end his day.

Shawaryn with six walks in five innings today after walking only 12 in 42 frames in his first seven starts. Yeah and 5 of those walks came in one start as well so the bulk of his walks on the year come from two of his eight starts.

The Red Sox signed RHP Dylan Thompson out of the indy leagues (Winnipeg Goldeyes) and assigned him to Salem. “It’s great for him,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. “He’s been a good arm in this league for a couple of years. He got himself in good shape this off-season, went to a workout in April and threw in front of the Red Sox. Credit the Red Sox for putting something together for ‘indy’ ball guys and inviting him down there. It gives them a chance to see guys just in case they have some holes that they need to fill during the season.”

It looks like a screwball. If it actually does that, that’s a pretty amazing pitch. I’d love to see statcast on it, and get an idea of the horizontal movement.

My man Cole Brannen with another 2-hit game. Sitting right on the Mendoza line. Fingers crossed he’s flipped a switch.

Also, Duran with Salem’s only two hits so far back up to .411/.471/.539, with a 0.533 BABIP in 157 PA.

Duran is 3/4 tonight again. I know there has been some arguments about promoting him too early but c’mon this is absurd. What more does he need to do?

Duran's line keeps getting more and more bizarre. His BABIP was unsustainably high two weeks ago. Then he basically stopped hitting extra-base hits and started striking out a little more, and his average has done nothing but climb. His Iso in May is .091. If his BABIP for the month was "only" .394--higher than the best seasons of Tony Gwynn or Wade Boggs-- his slash line for the month would be .295/.380/.386.

Duran ended up 3/5 with a K and a flyout to CF. He had a single to each field.
His line with no ifs attached:
.413/.472/.538/1.010
ADD: Seth Beer was promoted to AA.
Seth's final line:
.328 / .414/ .602 / 1.016
At 35 games each, they both have close to equivalent results. Both have 77 TB and Beer has 49 RP vs Duran's 46.
These are the two league leaders in just about every category by a wide margin. Seth plays about equal games in LF/1B

First, I realize the video game numbers are unsustainable. On the other hand, although there might be 100 points BABIP difference between A+ and MLB defenses, that has really not come into play much from what I've seen. There have been very few close defensive plays. He's hitting them hard and hitting them where they ain't. If you put a major league defense behind the pitcher there wouldn't have been a 100 point difference in BABIP. Major leaguers aren't getting to the rocket grounders up the middle or the line drives into the outfield. The bigger question to me is if he can continue to hit them where they ain't against better pitching. If he can, he's going to set new bars in BABIP.

I’ve been wondering about the power outage and I’m wondering if he’s changed his approach at all as the league starts attacking him differently.

I'm not sure where to get month by month breakdowns of teams but I am guessing the entire team has done that. They seem to be geared more towards station to station baseball. That could be due to the park they play in.
Note that his OPS is also climbing. I'm guessing the same is also true there for the team.

For me he's a more of a statistical oddity at this point. I check his daily status line with the same curiosity I had when I was checking Shaq Thomson's in the GCL a few years ago lol We'll have a better idea on who he is when he reaches AA but for now I won't pencil him as belonging to same category as a Casas or a D. Hernandez. Gonna be an interesting summer that's for sure.

If anything the trend is more extra base hits: Last 7 days .533/.632/.733/1.365 Iso 200 .158 K/PA Last 28 days .444/.515/.600/1.115 Iso 156 .194 K/PA Season .413/.472/.538/1.010 Iso 125 .203 K/PA If you use monthly splits, the April numbers are skewed by a flurry of XBH at the end of the month.
