15 years ago today the Yankees and Red Sox were scheduled to play a Saturday afternoon game on national TV. The game almost got rained out and ultimately was played after the Red Sox players insisted on playing.
We all know what happened between Varitek and ARod, however, there was so much more that happened during this game. I was fortunate enough to attend this game (still carry around the ticket stub in my wallet) which was probably one of the best games I have attended.
Some recollections:
-Field was so soggy the groundscrew aerated the entire outfield grass before the game.
-There second scrum between Sturtze and Kapler was potentially much worse as Sturtze had Kapler in a head lock until Ortiz came over to throw a couple of haymakers at Sturtze until being pushed away bye a Red Sox coach while Nixon tackled Sturtze. Ortiz likely would have been tossed if the umpires had the ability to review instant replay.
-Yankees went up 9-4 and the Red Sox kept on coming back.
-Yankees lead by 10-8 in the top of the 9th inning. A bunch of obnxious Yankee fans sitting beside me started leaving after the top of the 9th. I asked them for one of their numbers so I could call them when the Red Sox won. They refused to give me one of their numbers although I took some solace knowing that they had a even longer ride back to the New York metro area knowing the Red Sox had one.
-Fenway went nuts after Mueller hit the game winning HR off Rivera. Some Yankee fan wearing a full pinstripe uniform (guy had to be at least 25 years old) was running for cover from the bleachers trying to get away from the verbal abuse by Red Sox fans. I can't recall any fan base except the Yankee fans who wear their team's full uniforms. Kinda weird.
Check out Jenn McCaffrey's Athletic article which provides a lot more background on this game from the perspective of various players, announcers, grounds crew, etc. One of the best summaries of this game I have seen.
