I'd agree with this. Bill James kind of grew up into adulthood in the 1960s and I remember him comparing 1960s baseball to baseball of the 1970s and 1980s and he mentioned that baseball of the 1960s was stagnant, a case of waiting to see when the mistake by the pitchers would be and how many men on when the HR would be hit. In the 1960s that was just about the only way to score. Batting averages were down and it was difficult to string hits together. Even though he grew up with that, he preferred baseball of the 1970s and 1980s. While he didn't recommend all of that baserunning and didn't care for artificial turf he liked the game it created. He liked the variable styles of scoring runs that existed in those decades. Now baseball again has become HR derby where offense consists of draw walks and smack HRs (all at a much higher rate than the pitching era 1960s). I can imagine he's not too crazy about that. Honestly, I agree. I think baseball had a better style in the 1970s and 1980s - a lot more diversity in offensive attacks. Now I think it's pretty much the same for each team. It's become defensive shifts to limit hits and guys drawing walks and striking out a lot in their efforts to smash HRs with these ridiculous baseballs. 1969 was the first year of what would become known as "The Bob Gibson Rule" which followed "The Year of the Pitcher", 1968. They lowered the mound and the game and stats dramatically changed. That and I believe the strike zone might have changed. I remember James saying that the zone prior to 1963 was the shoulders to the bottom of the top of the knees but was lowered to the bottom of the knees or something like that. I think it was also changed back after 1968. They didn't want any more .301 batting championships like Yaz had.

I'd say Chaim Bloom, based on what little I truly know about him, would be an excellent hire and very much in step with the younger GMs the game has now. Basically back to the Theo era in a way.
He'll have his work cut out for him this winter.

Bloom certainly seems like he will be the opposite of DDom, it will be nice to get some fresh perspective. Very curious to see how he handles two guys in Betts and Martinez who will be looking to make more than the entire Rays roster.

I hope its Bloom. He seems to be a guy who's thought of as a real potential baseball genius type. Been hoping for this, obviously.

I hope Eddie Romero still stays. Actually I like the four they have maybe with this guy it will round out well. Ironically he is good at pitching and I feel this is the best croup of pitchers we’ve had . I can name six easy I like and it’s not a stretch. I can’t wait for this series to wrap up .
By the way regarding the series how perfect. Yankees which I tought was a good built team for the season . They lose and hopefully the Astros lose. I rooting for Nationals. How funny getting rid of Harper and two wins away. Lol.

I’d be lying if I knew the top candidates out there from around baseball but since day 1 Bloom was the guy that peaked my interest the most, I’m excited. After spending 15 years at an in division rival he should know our system as well as anyone not on the payroll.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's something like Bloom as PBOps and Romero as GM. (Pure speculation, not coming from a place of knowledge)

For me, living in the Tampa/Bradenton area, the ONLY person I'd prefer would be Friedman. This would be a huge positive for the organization. Pleas be true!!

VERY excited about this (potential) hire. I would hope Bloom does a "reset" of sorts. I think he creatively could move us under the $208M, if JD Martinez decides to opt-out.
I would like to see him focus on the "core", and move some expensive pieces out (like Price). Take a year to re-direct the resources to improving the farm system. Dombroski did his job, and he did it well, but I would like to see us get back to what we had with Theo and Cherington. Where Cherington went off the rails was when he signed Panda and Hanley. Ben did a lot of good things that we sometimes forget.
Anyway, Bloom will be stronger on the big picture, and I'm going to be ecstatic, if the Sox bring him in!!!

Jeff Passan@JeffPassang
Chaim Bloom may be the most well-regarded executive in baseball without a GM title. If he is indeed the Red Sox’s choice, as multiple sources believe he will be, this would be seen as a home run of a hire.

So who is gone if Bloom does become GM
Mookie is gone. It seems like no matter what we offer him, he wants to go to FA. And what if we do offer him the most money? What if he just wants to leave Boston and he chooses the second highest ammount. Out of Price and Sale, I see Price. Sale has the ceiling, but is more prone to more risky injuries. Trade Price to someone trying to make a push for the playoffs.

I don't think Hazen can come back. Arizona can deny them permission to talk to him. From Jen's article, the two that I'd be most interested in are David Forst, who is the A's GM, or Chaim Bloom, who is the VP of Baseball Ops for the Rays. Good experience developing farm systems and winning on the margins, would be interesting to see what they do with the added resources. As the first person on the board to reference Bloom by name I'm going to request Rosenthal and all other media outlets credit me with having this first, thanks.

What if he just wants to leave Boston and he chooses the second highest ammount. Out of Price and Sale, I see Price. Sale has the ceiling, but is more prone to more risky injuries. Trade Price to someone trying to make a push for the playoffs. Mookie has said a few times that he understands this is a business and that's what is driving him to FA. Even if the Sox offered to make him the highest paid player in MLB right now, I still believe he will want to go to FA to see what that market is and not leave any money on the table. That said, I think the Sox explore just what a trade would return in terms of players. The Sox can always wait and see what he could bring at the one and only trade deadline in mid 2020. However, if Mookie is injured at the deadline, then it will only be a draft pick via the Qualifying Offer route. If Bloom is hired, it will be interesting to see what returns he focuses on in any offseason trades. And if he does trade Mookie, do they end up going after him in the FA market after next year (similar to the MFYs and Chapman scenario).
