Actually it's kind of guttural, as if you're gargling plegm. It's not Hi-am. The C isn't silent, but it's not CH like the word change. Like I said, that is actually my Hebrew name and that's how it's pronounced. Even though it is a guttural C sound it's not heavily accented, which is why the H sounds more dominant in the name. According to the Rays its pronounced HIGH-em. Pardon my ignorance, but how might one pronounce “Chaim”? Redsox0407 has bingo. My Hebrew school teacher was named Chaim. "There is only one Rays executive whose official bio begins with a pronunciation guide for his first name: “HIGH-em” Bloom. I asked Bloom if he often finds himself in the position of explaining to people in the industry how to say it. “All the time,” he said. Most people, he added, “figure it out or they figure out something close enough that they can call me.” He’s given up on the guttural “ch” sound, though. “The ‘ch’ to me is sort of a varsity-level thing with my name,” he joked. “In this game, if the worst thing you’re being called is some mispronounced version of your actual name, you’re doing pretty well.”" www.tabletmag.com/jewish-life-and-religion/282617/chaim-bloom-tampa-bay-rays

I don't think Hazen can come back. Arizona can deny them permission to talk to him. From Jen's article, the two that I'd be most interested in are David Forst, who is the A's GM, or Chaim Bloom, who is the VP of Baseball Ops for the Rays. Good experience developing farm systems and winning on the margins, would be interesting to see what they do with the added resources. As the first person on the board to reference Bloom by name I'm going to request Rosenthal and all other media outlets credit me with having this first, thanks. But hell, you're his neighbor!! One thing for sure is that this adds to and portends a super exciting winter. Even if what was once unthinkable...that Mookie goes...I have acclimated to it and am anxious for, as someone above said, the Reset.

Came here to read what you guys have to say about the new DOBO and I was not let down. I don't feel the need to read anymore from other sources, I am excited for the new guy and you guys were reliable as always.
Seems like a younger new Theo.

I can't wait to see the creative approaches to getting enough pitching depth for reasonable cost. We need that like right now. When you think about it, the Red Sox will be operating like the Rays when it comes to whittling the payroll down for at least the next few seasons.
I just hope Bloom can handle the Boston media because it sure will be different than what he's used to.

David Laurila davidlaurilaqa· 9h Chaim Bloom press conference begins with PR head Kevin Gregg pronouncing “Chaim” one way, Tom Werner pronouncing it a different way, and then Sam Kennedy pronouncing it each way. This might take awhile. LOL, for me, I doubt if I will ever have a spoken conversation where I need to say it out loud. I don't know any baseball fans here. I'll just keep saying it in my head as it's written.

I'll say one thing about Chaim Bloom: He obviously graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Crash Davis School of baseball cliches and PR-speak. His opening press conference was a masterful job as an obviously practiced public speaker saying nothing of substance while making it sound studious.

One of the nice things as a fan about Dombrowski was that he was pretty open about what he was looking to do. That made the offseason and trade deadline more fun for me - the anticipation of wondering how he was going to get the starting pitcher he promised. One of the only downsides I can think of of having a more creative GM is that we probably won’t have any idea what he’s going to do before he does it.

Lip service is cool and all but you know who else can see it besides the fans? Opposing GM's. If I'm a GM of another team and I see that DD has "promised" a trade for a pitcher, that instantly gives me more leverage. I can respect straight shooters but I'd much rather have a calculated and strategic mind.

One of the only downsides I can think of of having a more creative GM is that we probably won’t have any idea what he’s going to do before he does it. Dombrowski's winters here usually involved a pretty clear-cut primary objective (get an ace, get a closer, get a big bat), whereas Bloom is facing a far more complex offseason in which the goal (get under $208M while remaining competitive) is rather nebulous and there are many potential paths to getting there. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that he didn't pretend to be caught up on every aspect of the organization and its workings on day one, or to already have detailed offseason plans and strategies that he was ready to roll out to the public. I'm not sure what you guys would have preferred him to say differently.

I have this secret hope that as a Latin major from Yale, Bloom is fond of St. Augustine's famous saying, "Make me chaste, Lord, but just not yet," and will spend one more year over 208.

Just saw that. That didn't last long. I thought they were trying to keep him. Guess with Dombrowski gone LaRussa didn't want to stay.

I never did understand what LaRussa's job was with the Sox, but his presence made me... wary. I am glad he will get to enjoy the lovely climate and scenery of southern California.
