Peter Gammons hinting that it's just about a done deal. Welp, perhaps it's time for the Sox to go for a small reset and position themselves better for the long term. Cole, Paxton, Severino, Tanaka...anyone other than the Yankees winning the division next year is starting to feel unrealistic.

To move away from the (old) evil empire, to the new kid on the block, here's a takedown of Luhnow and the corporate-fixer mindset that he brought to the Astro ownership's table. I hadn't realized that he had his fingerprints all over the proposal to rework MiLB, but it does fit his MO. That's something he honed working for McKinsey - which I was also unaware of. For myself a lot of the pieces start to fall into place. Here's a sample: After many decades of minor league status quo, there's an argument to be made for thinking through the rationale for the current league structure. And as for the jobs, if you include the side-benefits from people visiting a minor-league ballpark there may be some real money there, or it could be overstated. There's no way of knowing without real data and that's in short supply. But treating the players like slave labor with a proposal for a minuscule increase in wages... that reeks of MLB's labor history. Historically, that was a one-sided relationship that ownership fought like hell to preserve. Doesn't look as if that's changed when it comes to MiLB journeymen. That's just one piece of the story. There's much more to ponder in the article. I'll post a link to this in thread about the proposed changes to the minor leagues also.

Yeah, the Yankees being cheap is not a thing. They'll spend the money if they want the right target. What a offer on the first offer. Surpassing the Greinke AAV and Price total. This offer could go up too.
Add- Hopefully the offer does go up, just to stick it to the Yankees, but I don't see the Yankees getting denied here.

Bob Klapisch @bobklap
I'm told #Yankees have a seven-year, $245 million offer on the table for Gerrit Cole. Would be a record-setting contract for a pitcher, surpassing Greinke’s $34.4 million AAV. Question is whether #Dodgers or #Angels will go to 8-9 or even 10 years.

Strasburg returning to the Nats for 7/245. Probably a ton of deferred money but wow.

That’s a terrible deal. Good lord. Guess I’ll wait and see what will count for the CBT but yikes.

80 million deferred. Includes interest so he's not giving up present day value. No idea what that does for the CBT calcs, if anything.

So does that mean that $35 million/year is no longer the price for Cole and that the annual price has now gone up? We already know that he has at least seven years. If any of thought that 7 and 245 would get Cole, now those numbers have to be short of what would be anticipated. Perhaps 8 at 36 million (at least) which brings you to $288 million? Hell, at that point, you KNOW they'll be shooting for the first 300 million $ contract for a pitcher. For 8 years that $300 million would work out to $37.5 million/year if it comes to pass.
The other interesting thing is that now it's Cole or bust for NYY and LAA. Because there is no plan B in that vicinity. Cole has been better than Strasburg the past couple of years, but Strasburg would have made a great consolation prize. Now with him off the market, Cole is the one elite pitcher left.

Geez. Strasburg is two years older than Cole, and projects to be more than 2 WAR worse. A commensurate deal for Cole would be like 9 years/$450 million.

I mean, who in their right mind commits nine years to any pitcher? This is getting totally out of control. How long is the list of truly successful front line starters on deals like that? Scherzer is the only one who comes to mind.

given Strasburg at 245....i can see Cole at 255. As long as he can beat 245...i think he will take it. That basically leaves the MFY and LA teams as the teams in play
If there is a team willing to spend 300 million on an Ace....well that is crazy. my hope is the MFY get screwed by the market being so expensive.

Scherzer is the only one who comes to mind. Wayne Garland deal was for 10y, that was an injury filled contract. Mike Hampton deal was? 7?? Forget, it was injury filled. Cringe on these LT pitcher deals, like one Price signed and he's been hurt some also with 3y left we know.

Every year I look at the winter meetings and the next couple weeks after it as fun pre-Christmas/extended Festivus time. With this year’s desire to break up components of the core a year early - esp with NYY about to blow past the third tier - so billionaires can make more billions has me a little sour on all of this. Still, I remain intrigued ro see what Bloom does. That said, I reserve the right to be crabby.

Death, taxes, and Heyman hyping a MYSTERY TEAM that is in on a Boras client. It's almost as much a mystery why Heyman doesn't investigate and find out. Nah, just easier to parrot what Boras tells him.

Death, taxes, and Heyman hyping a MYSTERY TEAM that is in on a Boras client. The only thing that isn't a mystery is that this will happen every off-season. It's one of the great known unknowns.
