Angels trying to free up cash for Cole. Will Wilson was the Angels first round pick in 2019. It could also be for Rendon. I don't think they have a above replacement level player at third base right now. Cosart wasn't one, but he was a option at third base for them.

The Phillies have reached an agreement with free-agent shortstop Didi Gregorius, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Gregorius, a client of Excel Sports Management, will get a one-year deal, per Sweeny Murti of WFAN. The pact’s worth $14MM, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Hey look at that...the cheapskate Yankees just signed a free agent. And they spent $324 million for 9 years....and here I thought George Steinbrenner was dead and was told that the Yankees don't spend money anymore.
Don't know how good the deal will look in year 8 or 9, but for year 1, 2, and 3, the Yankees look well set up to win as this simultaneously makes them much stronger and weakens their biggest threat, Houston.
I would say the Red Sox are playing for a Wild Card spot.

That seems like too much for a pitcher, if I may state the obvious. When does Cole become an albatross?

I wonder where the 36 mil per year leaves the NYYs for tax purposes. They must be close to the top tier if not over. I'm sure they already found a place for Happ's contract and let's see what they get on that trade.

given Strasburg at 245.. ..i can see Cole at 255. As long as he can beat 245...i think he will take it. That basically leaves the MFY and LA teams as the teams in play If there is a team willing to spend 300 million on an Ace....well that is crazy. my hope is the MFY get screwed by the market being so expensive. Uhhh No. Excuse me and my incorrectness.

If the market is picking up like this, we might be looking at a ~$400M deal for Mookie. Obviously depends on which teams get involved, and he's not a Boras client, but I could easily see $396M/11y.

Does the next CBA significantly raise the luxury tax threshold?

Frankly if it's this crazy I try for 13 years 450 million. That really doesn't seem that crazy anymore.

Does the next CBA significantly raise the luxury tax threshold? To be determined, but most likely it has to greatly increase it.

Hey guys, I'm now finally worried about the Sox ability to re-sign Mookie. I was so sure he would be in Machado range. Now...

One consequence of the CBT has been lenthening contracts. When you're trying to sign a free agent that you really want, in order to sweeten the pot you have this false constraint in how much per year you can offer a guy. Gerrit Cole may be, in the near term, worth something like $50M per year. But... you can't realistically offer him $50M a year. And it's not that the Yankees couldn't pay him that money, it's that the rules make it less sensible. So, in order to improve an offer you need to offer years instead of money. Which leads to Gerrit Cole getting nine years.
What is striking about this move from a baseball sense is that the Astros were basically Gerrit Cole better than the Yankees last year. So that's a pretty immediate balance shift. The Yankees had a really solid pitching staff, but they didn't have an anchor. Severino and Paxton are both more #2 types. Of course, you can with with two guys like that at the top of the rotation, but it makes things a lot easier when you have the one dependable guy.
Cole is going to give up his share of homers in that park which probably gives the Cy Young advantage to someone else, but I don't see any reason to think he'll be anything other than outstanding on the front end of the deal.
And, again, the reasons for not signing Mookie Betts are kinda artificial. You're paying extra money on it (which the owners have plenty of) and trading down 10 spots in a few drafts.
