Do people think that the Red Sox will roll with Chavis/Dalbec or will they add a Thames?
Personally, I'm really liking the idea of trading for Dominic Smith if they could swing it. He's clearly blocked on the Mets like forever by Alonso and neither of them could possibly play another position other than 1B. Smith should really be able to take advantage of the Monster from looking at his spray chart. 1B/DH types are clearly not worth very much in today's market, but it would still probably be tough to get him.

Base on his 2019 performance, Chavis should be an every day player in 2020. Whether that is at 2B or 1B is to be determined. 2B seems covered, albiet an upgrade would not hurt, so likely Chavis plays 1st in 2020.
Dalbec has the opportunity to change the landscape with a terrific spring and shift Chavis to 2B.
I do not think the Sox will go outside the organization for a 1B candidate.

Sam Travis will be the opening day 1B That would be a real feel good story if he performed well enough to earn the position !

Chavis isn't even an average major league hitter yet based on his 2019 performance, and that's with an unsustainable .347 BABIP. Outside of April, he wasn't even playable, even at 2B. He had a 64 wRC+ in the 2nd half of the season. Getting absolutely nothing from him, Pearce and Nunez, along with Moreland being hurt for half the season was one of the major things that went wrong in 2019. Penciling Chavis into the starting lineup without other good options is a disaster waiting to happen. On a well constructed roster, he would have to force his way into playing time.

If the Red Sox truly see themselves as World Series contenders, they cannot go into the season with Sam Travis, Michael Chavis, or Bobby Dalbec as their 1B options. Travis and Chavis have yet to prove that they can hold a starting position down for a full season. Travis can’t seem to put everything together and Chavis is still young enough to show inconsistency. Dalbec hasn’t even played a single game as a major leaguer. That’s not to say that they can’t step up, but there’s a lot of questions there.
Dominic Smith would be an amazing pick up, but he’s gonna come with a bit of a cost.

Let’s trade for Trey Mancini

Chavis experienced growing pains after a fast start and then regressed to a questionable level of performance. Unfortunately the injury resulted in him loosing the opportunity to keep working on adjustments. Devers, whose level I realize is one Chavis will not reach, had similar growing pains in 2018. Way to soon to write him off. Not likely that his norm will reach his 2019 high level or be as poor as his low periods.
Davis looks good, but I do not see how the Sox match up with the Mets on a deal unless they saw Bennentendi as an upgrade, but who would want to do that ?

I’m perfectly fine with piecing together a low-BA, power-capable platoon between 1B and DH. Invest in players/positions that impact the overall game more.

There's no good options for the Sox here. This thread is more or less depressing and points out one of the very reasons why the Sox should reset.
All besides short stop, third base, DH, and catcher (at least starting wise, Vazquez) you can put a ? next to. I can't even put any of the outfielders into this conversation because no one has any clue who they're keeping at this present time.
Thames seems like the best option for cheap, but who knows how much the Sox will actually spend to get him/how low he's willing to go to take a starting job. He's a historically bad defender and he just turned 33.

What they do here will tell us a lot about what they think of Dalbec.
If they're trying to save money and think Dalbec is an MLB regular as early as midseason, my bet is that they take the spaghetti-against-the-wall approach at 2B and 1B with combinations of Chavis, Peraza, Travis, Hernandez, Lin, Arauz, and perhaps even the likes of Chatham and Longhi.
If they do not think Dalbec is likely to force his way into the lineup midseason, then it would appear they need to do something, but moving a big contract first would be necessary.
As for Chavis, as I've said, he has earned a roster spot going forward, to be sure, but he hasn't earned an everyday role at the plate nor in his failure to this point to show he can stay healthy for 162 games. He's suffered a serious injury of some kind each of the last 4 seasons.

What does it tell us about Casas? Nothing. This. He's probably 3 years away. Good rule of thumb: don't make roster plans with any consideration for guys in the system below AA.

Considering how this season seems to be going I'm fine with seeing what the Red Sox have in Chavis, Travis and Dalbec. That is, unless this organization has zero faith in those 3 ever contributing anything in the majors. I'm expecting the Red Sox to put up an 83-win season so anything that might help in 2021 and beyond is fine by me.

They have a spot for a lefty 1B.
If they sign a backup catcher who also plays 1B ... and he's a LHB ... pencil him in for 20 starts at 1B.
Other names: Tommy Joseph. Rhb. 2ND half: Ockimey. Lhb.

Thames is an obvious candidate but I think he'll go for more than they want to spend.
Greg Bird might be a fit. He has power and can take a walk. The hit tool is questionable but if he stays healthy, for awhile it seemed like he could be a 30 HR guy for the Yankees. Maybe he could be for the Red Sox, and for very cheap.
At this point if not Thames, I'd take a flier on Bird. Of course I would have taken a flier on Shaw as well. We'll see. Doing absolutely nothing makes no sense unless they really think that Peraza at 2b and Chavis at 1b every day is the answer. If it is, we're going to be in for a very long year.

Greg Bird is 27 with a career .211/.301/.424 line. Away from Yankee Stadium? .195/.289/.372. Nah.

www.masslive.com/redsox/2019/08/michael-chavis-injury-boston-red-sox-rookie-hurt-shoulder-on-diving-catch-likely-wont-miss-more-than-10-days.htmlLet's remember that Chavis was at .794 OPS before he got injured making a great catch and then went 0-13 lowering it to .766 which was still almost league average at 96 OPS+. I worry much more about the injuries than is his bat good enough. At 2B his bat is easily good enough and his D was a pleasant surprise for a guy that just started playing 2B. At the same time it makes sense to pick up a cheap guy for 1B and plan on Chavis platooning at first and second to see what happens. It won't cost much, those guys are dirt cheap and having Dalbec waiting in the wings adds very good depth. Like what would Moreland cost to bring back 2-4 million in this market?

Options are quickly drying up. Obviously Thames makes the most sense, even though he's defensively challenged. Moreland is still out there. Can't imagine he costs a lot at this point. More than minimum wage though, which is where the Sox are or should be financially in what they're looking to add.

That Moreland hasn't signed yet might indicate that both he and the Red Sox may be eyeing a reunion.

That Moreland hasn't signed yet might indicate that both he and the Red Sox may be eyeing a reunion. The Sox have Dalbec, Chavis, Travis, Peraza and Lin to play 1B, as well as bringing back Holt. Moreland is the best of the lot at this time. Pairing MM and Dalbec in a loose platoon could produce reliably above average bat and glove at 1B; as well as a built in mentor for Dalbec, Chavis for the position. I wish for Moreland’s return during this transition.

Lin, Peraza, and Travis don't hit well enough to be 1b. Moreland is a distinct possibility. I mentioned Bird. Logan Morrison is another possibility. Then of course there is Thames.
