www.mlb.com/news/best-mlb-draft-classes-for-each-team?t=mlb-draft-coverage"Red Sox: 1983 The Red Sox have drafted consistently better than any other team. Their Drafts in 1976 (Wade Boggs, Bruce Hurst, John Tudor), 1989 (Jeff Bagwell, Mo Vaughn, Paul Quantrill) and 1968 (Cecil Cooper, Ben Oglivie, Bill Lee, Lynn McGlothen, John Curtis) each could rank as the best for several clubs, but they all have to take a back seat to Boston's 1983 crop. Many teams rated Texas right-hander Roger Clemens as the best college pitcher available entering the spring but he slumped in May and wound up being the seventh one selected (No. 19 overall) in June. Ranger (Texas) JC outfielder Ellis Burks, a first-rounder in January, made two All-Star teams in an 18-year big league career. The Red Sox found four other fringe big leaguers as well, but Clemens and Burks alone accounted for 189 WAR -- more than any Draft effort ever except for the Dodgers in 1968."

www.mlb.com/news/the-top-10-mlb-draft-classes-of-all-time?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage"2. 1983 Red Sox Many teams evaluated Texas right-hander Roger Clemens as the best college pitcher available entering the spring, but he struggled in May and wound up being the seventh one selected (No. 19 overall) in June. Boston signed just six big leaguers from their Drafts that year, but Clemens and Ranger (Texas) JC outfielder Ellis Burks (No. 20 overall, January) combined for 189 WAR by themselves."
"4. 1976 Red Sox Boston found a pair of quality left-handers in Utah high schooler Bruce Hurst (No. 22 overall, June) and Georgia Southern's John Tudor (third round, January secondary), but it was their June seventh-rounder who elevated this crop to the next level. Scouts questioned Florida prep shortstop Wade Boggs' power, speed and athleticism before he hit his way to five batting titles and the Hall of Fame."

theathletic.com/4663738/2023/07/06/mlb-awards-races-midseason-ohtani-acuna-gallen/?source=emp_shared_articlesee especially Red Sox "near miss" on Jason Stark's mid season LVP!! - "Of the 151 players who have enough trips to qualify for the batting title this season, here’s where Abreu ranked heading into Wednesday’s games: • 141st in OPS (.650) – last among regular first basemen. • 143rd in park-adjusted OPS+ (80) – also last among regular first basemen. • 141st in slugging (.356) – second-lowest among regular first basemen. • 136th in on-base percentage (.294) – also second-lowest at his position. But there’s more. His seven home runs are the second-fewest of any regular first baseman, even though he plays in one of the most homer-friendly parks for right-handed hitters. Speaking of which … He’s hit only one home run in Houston all season – and none against American League teams. And one more thing: He’s 12 for 75 (a .160 average!) against the four teams in the AL West, including 2 for 19 against an A’s team that’s on pace to give up 1,000 runs!"

www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/37999258/2023-mlb-draft-american-league-recaps-kiley-mcdaniel#bos"Boston had some nice fortune as New Jersey prep product Virginia C Kyle Teel (7) made it to the Red Sox's 14th overall pick. He's an above-average defender who can easily stick behind the plate, and while I think his hand placement/path needs a tweak in pro ball, the tools are there for solid-average offensive output. The Red Sox have been leaning more into prep position players with upside in recent years, and Nazzan Zanetello (64), Antonio Anderson (72) and Phoenix Call (275) fit that profile this year. Zanetello was one of the best athletic testers in this class, not just for his foot and bat speed, but also how explosive he is and how he can create such bat speed with limited hand movement. He'll need more polish but has an impact upside. Anderson is a switch-hitting potential shortstop with a balanced hit/power combo with every tool average to above. Call is a plus-plus runner with some questions on his polish and hit tool. Georgia Tech 2B Kristian Campbell (186) is an above-average runner with contact skills but will also need a swing adjustment to tap into his raw power. Wright State SS Justin Riemer (119) could be a find as a mid-major pick to click who missed most of the season with a torn ACL. Canisius RHP Matt Duffy (274) has nice command and the shape of a solid-average arsenal. Virginia LHP Connelly Early (NR) should have been in my rankings and was in Rounds 5-6 in my notes with a good feel of average stuff. Clemson lefty reliever Ryan Ammons (NR) has an above-average fastball with good shape and enough feel to be a middle reliever."

www.mlb.com/news/july-2023-mlb-pipeline-rookie-hot-list?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage1. Masataka Yoshida, OF, Red Sox (previous rank: 5) Yoshida has been steadily effective for much of the season, but his recent streak pushes him to the top of the list. He’s at .333/.364/.548 over the past 30 days, with across the board numbers: four homers, 14 RBIs, 16 runs scored. And it doesn’t hurt his cause that he’s been especially torrid in the past three weeks as the Red Sox have surged into contention.

A reminder that this thread is for news articles only (and specifically those related to the Red Sox prospects). I moved some trade deadline stuff to that thread. Thanks.

www.masslive.com/redsox/2023/08/scout-raves-about-red-sox-young-catching-prospect-in-the-low-minors.html"One National League scout who watched Garcia recently came away raving about his potential in our weekly MLB Notebook. “Strong, muscular, durable, with a highly agile body with quick feet, and a take-charge, confident defender. A plus arm to all bases, and runs well for a catcher. Bat can be a Gary Sanchez-type power producer, with sound hitting actions, and the type of strength to to drive the ball to the big part of the field. Projects as a above-average skill-position player, supplying a 5-hole bat.” Garcia was signed for $850,000 in January of 2022 as an international free agent out of Venezuela. His older brother, outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, is also in the system. The Red Sox, of course, recently selected Kyle Teel, another catcher, out of the University of Virginia, in the first round of last month’s draft, and have several other intriguing prospects in the system, including Nathan Hickey, a fifth-round pick out of Florida in 2021, now catching at Portland, and Brooks Brannon, a ninth-round choice in the 2022, currently on the IL at Low A Salem. But Garcia looks to be the most promising international catching prospect in the organization since Daniel Flores, a 17-year-old phenom who was signed out of Venezuela for $3.1 million, but tragically passed away after a battle with cancer later that year. SoxProspects.com has Garcia as the organization’s 14th best prospect in its latest rankings."

www.mlb.com/news/august-2023-mlb-pipeline-rookie-hot-list?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage1. Triston Casas, 1B, Red Sox (previously unranked): Simply put, Casas has mashed recently. Among players with at least 75 plate appearances in the past month, his 217 wRC+ is second only to Freddie Freeman, and no other rookie is within 20 points of him. He has nearly half of his homers this season (eight of 17) in the last 30 days, which helped raise his slugging percentage from .398 to .475.

www.mlb.com/news/prospects-who-made-biggest-jump-in-top-30-rankings-2023?t=mlb-pipeline-coverageRed Sox: Yoeilin Cespedes, SS Cespedes received the largest bonus ($1.4 million) in Boston's 2023 international class because he was considered one of the more advanced hitters on the market, and he has lived up to that reputation in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. Cespedes is batting .359/.409/.594 with six homers in 41 games and also earning praise for his baseball IQ and work ethic.
