Just looking at bWAR, he was really very good for the Mets in 2017-2018, but is coming off a replacement-level year with the Indians, leading to his non-tender.
Bloom has better metrics re pitch-framing, game calling, etc., than I can look up, so I'm just going to trust that he'll be as good or better than Leon ... we'll see what the cost will be. Three years of control left.

Why wouldn’t the Indians just keep him then rather than trade for Leon? Seems odd.

"Plawecki was a standout behind the plate, where he ranked near the top of the majors in Baseball Prospectus’ Fielding Runs Above Average metric." Baseball savant has him in the 98th percentile for framing. Steamer projects him for a wRC+ of 83. Seems like another pretty decent move to get a guy that's (presumably) cheap, gives them depth in an area of need, has years of control left, and a little bit of upside potentially. He has reverse splits so far in the majors, but it looks like it's mostly due to BABIP so i'm assuming that's random. Still, not have drastic splits seems a good quality for a backup C. The Rays have had a lot of success due to their depth: blogs.fangraphs.com/the-rays-are-dollar-poor-savvy-rich/So for now I'm giving Chaim the benefit of the doubt on these moves.

"The Plawecki acquisition didn’t work out as hoped for the Indians, with whom he batted a dismal .222/.287/.342 across 174 PA as Roberto Perez’s backup."
Wait, what is dismal? He's like Mike Trout compared to Leon.

Bref has him as worth 0.1 WAR as a pitcher in 2019 too, so really this is a move to shore up the backup catcher spot AND add bullpen depth. Love having a GM who finds smart, outside the box solutions!
(non-sarcasm: this is another solid, on the margins move)

Can't say I'm really excited about his acquisition, but he's replacing Sandy Leon, so it's not like it's a downgrade. Leon is a low bar to clear.

I am guessing that he's likely far less money in contract than he would have been in arbitration which is why Cleveland didn't just keep him.

I wonder if Cleveland thought they could get fancy and bring him back on a minor league deal and they missed the mark.

So the Red Sox actually got something in return for Leon and signed a guy making less than half as much who is better than him. And they can keep him for 2 additional arb years? Nice move.

FWIW, the guy they got for him appears to be of the "literally trade us anyone healthy" variety. But yeah, this looks like a nice play by Bloom.

Looks like Sam Travis is DFA'd as a result of the signing.

Fielding Runs Above Average Of 113 catchers ranked Plaweki 12th Vazquez 15th Leon 26th legacy.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1899425Baseball Prospectus might not be what it used to be but they still have the best catcher defense metrics available publicly. . . . Steamer projections wRC+ Vazquez 86 Plawecki 84 Leon 60 . . . Maybe Bloom knows what he's doing and it's not "just" the money..

He’s great at framing pitches A small thing, but an important one. According to Statcast, Plawecki last season was the second-best pitch framer in the majors, trailing only the San Diego Padres’ Austin Hedges. Of pitches in the “shadow zone,” (basically the edge of the strike zone where the call could go either way), 53.6 percent of the time Plawecki got his pitcher a strike. For comparison, last season Leon was the best Red Sox backstop in pitch framing, with a 51.9 rate that ranked ninth in MLB. Christian Vazquez was 17th at 50.7.
