It's a bummer as a fan, but my point was that's one way of looking at it. The better projection system (imo) has Peraza as better. People are acting incredulous that they might go with Peraza over Holt for similar money like Holt is a far superior player. The only thing I'm trying to show is that at worst it's close. Your argument I get.

I don't mind Peraza, you never know if a guy can get better in Baseball. It isn't a horrible risk. I will point out though his best season war wise was a full season at SS. Even if he bounces back to that level, his value at 2b will be a lot lower. That's my worry it's not he needs to bounce back, he basically needs to grow as a hitter, which could certainly happen at his age. Yet it isn't simple bouncing back either. If he's a utility guy he's better at SS than Holt, but doesn't seem to be as good all around. Which frankly might not be as big of a worry now that the bench has another guy. That was Holt's value, he could play everywhere and act like the 4th OF, with Martinez being the 5th guy. Yet he also got injured a lot, which is why he frankly never put up bigger bwar seasons.

The big reason for Peraza over Holt that folks are overlooking is that he's a plus defensive SS, so he's your backup there. And that reshapes your whole bench.
Another factor is that Holt was no longer projecting to be able to play RF in Fenway adequately, which means you really want to get a true 4th OFer (as they did), which you can only do if you're not carrying two backup MI's.

Coincidentally, I was just looking at his stats, wondering what he is up to. He has lousy numbers this season, but only 36 PA and a .136 BABIP. Wonder what the story is.

Although it would be a crowd pleaser, I doubt they bring him back unless someone gets hurt.
I think Peraza sucks but they’re not going to get rid of him while he’s under team control for 3 more years. And they have to keep Arauz up. So not really sure where Brock fits in unless they DFA Tzu, but he’s still under team control through next year.

Regardless of what happens right now, they have to wait for the situation to play out with Holt and him be released so as to not be liable but a pro rated league minimum and not on the hook for his 2021 option. Boston isn't going to take over his deal, unless some kind of gift can be worked out with the Brewers with them paying most of the salary and them taking back a non prospect in return.. Which won't happen.

The fanboy in me would love for him to come back, but I doubt he does.
It's probably best for him to go to a team that could use him more and will wind up in the post-season as opposed to re-boarding a sinking ship like the 2020 Red Sox.
I mean, I feel this way about a lot of the team's players. They're probably better off elsewhere at this point. When Moreland and JBJ get traded I'll feel the same way - and definitely JDM if he does too. Just like I did about Hembree and Workman.
They played roles on the 2018 Red Sox and those guys will always be highly regarded by me for the joy they brought me that summer, but coming back to a team in this state doesn't make me feel nostolgic as it does sad. Other than Bogaerts and Devers (and maybe JDM) it's hard to see the next real competitive team have those 2018 players on it. Might as well start moving into the future at this point.
Either way Brock Holt will always be a Red Sox to me and remembered fondly. And with Holt, it's really easy to see him winding up on NESN sooner than later. He'll be around sooner or later. I have no doubt about that. And I will enjoy that when it happens.

I'm not enamored with Peraza, I don't hate him, but I'd much rather see Arauz get more looks than him. I'm not in love with Peraza being a most days starter. In fairness to him though, there is something viceral about his facial features that makes me want to punch him, and that says nothing about his baseball skills, I felt the same way about Mark Teixeira his entire career. I do look forward to Brock being on NESN, he meant a whole lot to the Boston community with all that he did off the field, on top of being a jack of all trades on the field.

The Sox are unlikely to claim him but bringing him back in a mini Wil Myers type deal doesn't seem out of the question. His salary is $3.25m in a normal year. We might have already saved enough on price to incorporate that but I wouldn't want the Sox to assume Price won't come back. A few players have returned.
If Arroyo cleared waivers, Peraza likely would too.
