Lucroy was soooo darn good (21 fWAR in 2012-2014). He has really fallen off in recent seasons, but still can be consired a good depth option IMO.

I get that Bloom is trying to strengthen the depth, but Lucroy has been washed up for some time. Wouldn't have bringing back Holt bolstered the infield depth instead of having to go with Lin versus Hernandez, neither one whom can hit or the Rule 5 pick, who isn't much of a hitter either?
I guess isn't quality depth better than quantity depth?

I'm all for BSOHL but 34-year-old catchers who have fallen off a cliff don't typically come back. I feel bad for him because his peak coincided with his lowest earning power. He was on track for a Russell Martin $80M contract.

It will be a major surprise if he makes the ballclub. Bringing Lucroy in does give them an experienced guy to spread the spring training workload out. Could be more helpful to pitchers trying to earn a roster spot than pitching to a AA catcher. Lucroy will likely have an out clause in his contract, but if not, having him stashed for injury coverage would not be a bad thing.

Certainly worth kicking the tires. No downside.

Shouldn't we expect that if he was playing hurt it led to a decline in his numbers? While I don't expect him to be the same player he was with the Brewers, after a successful operation and clean bill of health, couldn't he perform better than the last two years? If Lucroy wins the backup catching job, does Plawecki have options left?

I wouldn't call this signing depth as much as it is a lottery ticket. If it hits, then we've got a potential impact catcher and that's great. If he doesn't he probably opts out by June. Centeno is the catcher depth in the org, to me. But I really like the signing, there's no real risk involved.

I did find the answer to my own question regarding Plawecki and he is out of options. This makes me think they will try to keep Lucroy in Pawtucket for a while if he is willing.
If Lucroy flat out wins the backup job, would the Sox save any guaranteed money by cutting Plawecki by a certain date late in spring training?
Since Plawecki has 3 years of control, Lucroy will have to perform quite well for the Sox to choose him over Plawecki.

Since it was a straight MLB contract and not an arbitration number, it appears to be guaranteed. Any $$ the Red Sox would save would come from whether Plawecki signed another major league deal for another team, in which case they would be off-the-hook for the $$ spent by his new team (likely a minimum deal).

I didn't realize my texts to Mike about this move this morning had been hacked... I see no upside to keeping Lucroy over Plawecki unless Lucroy suddenly reverts back to 2016 Lucroy. I think they said they'd take a flyer on him, and they needed C depth. Again, the fact that Baldwin is in MLB camp kind of says it all there. As I tweeted, I think Lucroy would automatically get a 100k bonus if they don't cut him or put him on the MLB team out of camp, and he gets an automatic 6/1 opt out. I'd bet he negotiated for one at the end of camp as a well. I'll be surprised if he ever suits up for the PawSox, and very surprised if he does so after May.

I condensed all of the Lucroy conversation into one thread since there are now multiple threads.
