To be clear, this is not an injury. He’s behind due to pneumonia so they want him to get a full amount of warmup before the season starts.

Multiple long/swing types now on 26 man roster to open the season. Velazquez, probably Johnson as well and Weber.
Close your eyes in April and hope both Eovaldi/Rodriquez are very sharp. That's the rotation as of now.

Well, that's one way to limit his innings.

”Chris Sale will begin the season on the injured list”
I’m shocked

Yes, that is the official statement, however I am a bit suspicious. Recall last summer, they shut Sale down and stated that he was going to see the doctor (J.Andrews?) in 6wks when the swelling subsided. Six weeks later there was not mention. 8-10wks later when pressed, they indicated that the appointment had been pushed back. I am not suggesting that he be rushed this year, but he started a week behind the others. It is still February. Why would that result in IL?

There’s no reason to think this has anything to do with his elbow. The team and Sale have been very clear and upfront that his elbow is feeling good. All his throwing this spring has been fine. They just want to give him enough time to build his body up to full strength this spring, especially considering the pneumonia.

Even the hardiest young 20 year old civilian takes a while to gradually build back to full strength after pneumonia. There is no “bouncing back” from this. Muscle loss, tendon weakness, achy joints, general malaise in addition to weakened lungs and respiratory system is the norm. He had pneumonia earlier this month.
Sale is no 20 year old civilian finishing college. He is a 30 year old professional athlete who can not afford to even try to bounce back. Every day he will feel stronger. Every simulated inning will, over time, rebuild his capacity to go deeper in games; to get not only his arm and throwing motion back in proper shape but all the weakened parts of his entire body. Patience is the right attitude here.

They got four WS trophies out of Henry so I am not gonna complain about him. They got one out of the Sale trade and I am not complain about that either. Moncada was the price they had to pay, but at least Raffy is still here.

I was at Fenway south last week. Sale looks good. He was going threw all of the regular drills. I’d be shocked If this wasn’t all just being ultra cautious not to rush him. Threw Live BP today. Last pitch was crushed by Ockimey. So his not there yet. Defiantly behind.

Saw a photo of Sale taken I think today. Looked totally emaciated.(I know he always looks that way) Gonna have to start pumping some big Macs into him intravenously or something.
