Might as well. I hope he can start for a bit; probably a better option for it than Velazquez for now.

Good move. He's a high spin rate guy on the fastball/curveball who can limit hard contact (92nd percentile last year). ZiPS has him projected at:
Season G GS IP K/9 BB/9 HR/9 BABIP LOB% ERA FIP WAR 2020 35 11 87.7 9.65 3.18 1.23 .311 73.5 % 4.00 4.05 1.3
For comparison, Velazquez was projected at:
Season G GS IP K/9 BB/9 HR/9 BABIP LOB% ERA FIP WAR 2020 35 11 76.7 7.04 3.76 1.29 .316 71.3 % 4.81 4.92 0.6

Had an off year last season with 35 games. In 2018 played in 58 games with a 1.99 era. In 72.1 IP recorded 94 Ks.

That should read 600K base.
Was projected by Fangraphs for 2/10

YES. I'm convinced he can start if the baseball is back to normal and that he's probably the best reliever on the team even if it isn't. Feel free to bookmark this and mock me when he has a 83 ERA+ in August.
He gave up 25 runs in 18 innings a disastrous four-start stretch in late April/early May, and 16 runs in 56 2/3 outside of that. .208/.296/.344 opposing slash and a 28.2% K rate as a reliever last year.

Sure. Why not? McHugh is as good an option as anybody left unless they wanted to sign Buchholz so he can keep Sale company on the IL.
I guess we can pencil McHugh is as a bulk reliever along with Johnson on the other day they go with a closer? Or is McHugh good enough to start at this point? He hasn't really been a starter since 2017.

I had to look up “tenex procedures.” Cool. Miracles of modern science. This signing is.... nice. Keeps the Sox on track to be able to complete a 162-game schedule.

they need bodies and if he is an upgrade over Velasquez you have to like the move. it brings the Astros taint in the clubhouse, but we got our own issues to answer to.

I think the ship has sailed for Clayboy. Wouldn't be stunned if Theo brought him for a little bit if anyone gets hurt. Seems like his stuff plays better in the NL these days. Then of course theres the inevitable injury.

I would think that the pitchers would be less tainted given that they weren't cheating, although they benefited from increased run support. Yes, other than Fiers, they didn't speak up at all, but like you said, the Sox have their own issues to deal with. Besides, they already lost their valued manager from that mess in Houston.

Not to be pessimistic, but just considering all potential outcomes for this year....he's also a guy (who if pitching well) can be flipped at the trade deadline if we're out of contention.

This is another reason I love the signing. Low financial commitment, can be very useful on this roster and an upgrade, and if the team is not in the running come the deadline he's potentially a valuable chip for a club somewhere. Really like this move.

A Rays-like move, no? They always seem to extract value from pickups like McHugh. Let's see if Bloom can bring that mojo to Boston.

Can't wait to hear how this is another example of Bloom's incompetence.
(I agree with Oregon Norm, it's an extremely Rays move)

I'm not sure its as much of a Rays move (which to me, implies creativity) as much as its a "our SP depth is hideous, we waited out for the potential for a trade that would land Quantrill into March, now we need to take a shot at the best remaining option to field a baseball team" kind of move.
I'm saying nothing of Bloom's competence or incompetence by the way. This is just an obvious move that needed to happen and many of targeted to McHugh weeks ago in the pitching depth thread.

I don't know if I'd necessarily call it "creativity" as much as I'd say the Rays are really good at identifying the right buy low candidates to target and generally can stretch those out into more value than you'd expect. At in the profile, high spin-rate with an injury history deflating his face value, it feels like a Rays type of move to me.

I've been thinking this way with any of our signings so far haha. These guys are all pretty high upside signings (Peraza, Pilar, McHugh). They have the ability to help quite a bit, but also are valuable pieces to teams in need at the deadline. Such a low risk on our side that can net a fairly good return. I hope McHugh can start but hes an excellent reliever as well. So great grab

I'm saying nothing of Bloom's competence or incompetence by the way. This is just an obvious move that needed to happen and many of targeted to McHugh weeks ago in the pitching depth thread. I agree. I don't take much of what's happened as a sign of Bloom's competence or incompetence. All I know about Bloom is that he was highly regarded and factored in on a lot of great decision making that took place in TB. (Neander was the GM, correct? Or maybe I got the name wrong.) And everything that could have gone wrong in Boston has gone wrong for him. He knew he'd be stepping into a situation where he'd have to get under the luxury tax threshold despite Kennedy's backpedaling after Henry's proclamation. But he couldn't have anticipated that he'd lose his manager. And he couldn't have known for sure that his ace's status would be this precarious. I'm sure he tried every avenue to get under without having to deal Mookie but when they were far apart on what they felt his current value is or however you wanted to term it, he had to dump Mookie with very limited suitors as possibilities. Especially after attempts to unload JBJ and Price to get under the limit didn't work. I guess you could argue that he should have kept Mookie until July when he would have had multiple suitors but he might have gotten less and I think it was stressed to him the importance of getting under the limit. So Bloom has in my opinion been kind of GMing from a very disadvantageous vantage point. I'd like to see what he can do when he doesn't have two hands tied behind his back. If that happens at some point and some time passes, then I feel I'll be able to really evaluate what he can do. All that we're seeing here is a lot of dumpster diving. I have no idea if he has done it well or not, only that he's doing it more often than Dombrowski ever did, not that he really has much of a choice. Dombrowski came into a situation where the minor league cupboard was well stocked and he had money to burn. Bloom has no such luck.

Well, if he can't start, he definitely can be a follower and pitch 3-4 innings. Great pickup.

I was wondering why he was still available, he had minor elbow surgery and was just cleared to start throwing. Very solid move.
Now go complete that Meyers trade and get us Quantrill and we can start dreaming of winning the Division again lol.

McHugh probably had more than one team willing to bring him in on an incentive-based deal, and he (or his agent at least) can read a depth chart too. If he wants another crack at starting, the Red Sox are a great place for him to be.
