If it was necessary then obviously the correct move.
Even if it wasn't certain to be necessary, probably still a good move considering his value is considerably less in a truncated season. Hopefully he is back 100% by next summer.

Well, hopefully no baseball in 2020.

Maybe it was best that we traded Mookie.
Team would be crap if they play this year.

A lost season is the best time to have a lost season. A lost year it looks like. No baseball. Governor kicked out all the spring breakers from the beaches here in Florida (lol). Running for Prez will be the choice of a mental moron vs a mental maniac. Do we all play solitaire now?

Odd, Chris Sale wasn't on my Red Sox calendar of doom. So far January, February and March had Pedroia, Price and Betts. I just found September had Holt.

No one saw this coming. Lol. If they had done it last year when he should have and no baseball is played in 2020.... he could have possibly had the surgery and recovered and missed zero games. Obviously this is hindsight..... but he should have had it last Sept at the latest and he would already be 6-7 months in to recovery on a lost season

Well, that's the least surprising thing since....Tom Brady leaving. At this point, might as well. Doesn't matter much about him missing this abbreviated season. Just hope he doesn't miss most or all of next season, too.

it's only Thursday!
Tomorrow we are trading Jayson Tatum and David Pastrnak for 6 more weeks of home quarantine and a player to be named later

He should have had it back in August. I swear the Red Sox believe too much in essential oils, and rest...
Don't even get me started with the David Price special elbow BS...

If we do not play this year, are all contracts frozen and extended? Like, would Mookie be a free agent without ever playing a single game for LA? Or would contracts all be "frozen" ?

thankful for 2018. this is getting real messy. strange since he had 3 opinions and was gonna pitch. Even if there is just a half season, seems optimal for him to pitch since it would be low innings. To me, this portends to a lost season. I don't know that they would make this decision otherwise.

Yeah, you can imagine a degree of risk where it makes sense to forego surgery if he can pitch this season, but not if it seems likely this season gets canceled. And it may be dawning on them that this season probably ain't gonna happen.

It’s easy for us to say he should have had the surgery in August but at the end of the day that’s a last resort for a reason. You don’t get it until the experts conclusively say that it’s time.
Picked a hell of a year for it to happen

This makes sense. Didn’t he have like 3 opinions on his elbow? It always felt like he wasn’t getting TJ for business reasons somehow and that they would just be forcing him to perform as a 3-4 era pitcher. We’ll see what he looks like in a year or 2. But either way just a terrible resign when the signals were already there.

This rotation never will perform together for the Sox.

Of the seven top pitchers by bWAR on the 2018 champions, Eduardo Rodriguez is the only one who will pitch for the Red Sox if/when there's a 2020 season. That's quite a turnover.
Hoping Sale comes out strong on the other side. TJ is no guarantee and there didn't seem to be a clear indication that it would fix what was ailing Sale, but I hopeful.

I get people's frustration with the extension, he was having a lot of problems. I think some note should be given to the fact the Sox got 15.4 bWAR on 39.5 million dollars to this point. That is a lot of surplus.
Using a conservative 7m/year as bWAR value, he really only has to give the Sox another 10 or 11 bWAR to make his stay here neutral, as far as that metric.
I think it only far to note how valuable he was when he was leading the staff before the injury.
Haven't seen many better in my days, hope he can get back to top form.
