I'm pretty sure I read yesterday that if the teams stopped paying the $400/wk, but kept the players on their rosters, then the players would not qualify for unemployment. I know it sucks to be released, but at least they can receive federal benefits now instead of being in a crazy limbo with no job and no money.

If my count of transactions listed on this site is correct, the Red Sox released 59 minor leaguers between October 2018 and May 2019 (including a large number in January 2019). They released 9 players between October 2019 and May 2020. That's going to catch up at some point.

Well I hope our pro scouts are hard at work looking for gems in the groups of players being released. Hopefully our owners come to the conclusion that keeping their employees and taking advantage of this opportunity makes business sense for them.

They released 9 players between October 2019 and May 2020. That's going to catch up at some point. I count 12 releases, plus four retirements, this offseason. Three retirements the prior year so those more or less even out. There's also the matter of guys who leave in free agency and I think that accounts for a fair amount of the discrepancy. They had 22 XX(D) or MLFA free agents leave this offseason. I count 11 from the prior offseason, although I don't have the depth chart to work off of like I do this year. And finally, I think a lot of the 2018-19 offseason releases were DSL guys. They signed a lot of guys in the J2 2018 class and had a TON of players in the J2 2017 class (like I'm still not sure how they signed that many), and they had kept around a lot of older guys in the DSL because they couldn't sign anyone in the 2016 class. I think the high number last offseason was paring down a lot of those guys. For example, of the 22 guys released on January 21 and 22, I think like 15 of them were DSL players and most of the others were short-season US guys. Comparatively, they haven't released anyone from the DSL this offseason, and they typically don't until the summer. All that said, based on prior years, they were probably due for a first round of minor league cuts right when things shut down, so I would be more surprised if the Red Sox weren't cutting guys today than if they were, but pedroiaesque's point is true - some of these guys probably are better off getting cut so they can at least get unemployment.

There was a drop of DSL guys, for sure, but these guys were all March cuts: Durin O'Linger, Jared Oliver, Chris Madera, Danny Mars, Kevin McAvoy, Nick Duron, Tanner Raiburn, Harrison Cooney, Frankie Rios, Juan Florentino, Jose Gonzalez, Chad Hardy, Eddy Reynoso, Daniel Schlereth, and Zach Sterry. (Ryan Scott, Carlos Tovar, Johnny Bladel, Taylor Ahearn, Jordan Betts, Trey Ganns, Austin Glorius, and Lukas Young were all released in January.) Just noting that the knives always come out during minor league camp and that didn't happen this year.
I didn't count retirements; while they affect the numbers it seemed to me this discussion was about involuntary release. I didn't do an exhaustive assessment of free agents, but obviously they added a lot too: Andreoli, Bandy, Espinal, Longhi, Lucroy, Mieses, Springs, Alvarez, Mazza, Valdez, Hall, DeCarlo, Hildenberger, Puello, Allie, Kickman, Osich, Jones, and Meneses were all on my list and they probably added a few after that.

Kind of bummed about Trenton Kemp but the guy was never healthy. I couldn’t find any info about what he was out with this year and wondered if he was pondering walking away or something. Seemed like there were some good tools there and the K’s seemed to be Slowly inching down with flashes of power and a couple streaky flashes of hitting but never seemingly both at the same time.
