It's almost like some of you are rooting against the Red Sox. Respectfully, I disagree. As fans of the team, we want to see them do well. As such, when we disagree with things the team does, that can upset some fans. Obviously there's no way to tell right now what picks are gonna boom and what picks are gonna bust, but that doesn't mean we as fans can't speculate, express our emotions, and yes, disagree with the team's moves. Being critical of the team doesn't mean you are rooting against them.

Dodgers with the first senior pick of the draft to close out Round 2. Shrewd move to save a little $ and get a quality player....wouldn't surprise me to see them spend some $ on pick #66. You were right. Beeter is a nice get. They continue to be very good at this.

Can anyone explain to me how/why MLB Network keeps asking Harold Reynolds to analyze draft picks?

Can anyone explain to me how/why MLB Network keeps asking Harold Reynolds to analyze draft picks? Honestly the primary host has been significantly more annoying than Reynolds to me. All he's doing is saying the names and then "pretty good class". We get it, baseball teams draft good baseball players.

Being critical of the team doesn't mean you are rooting against them. There's a difference between not liking the pick and being unhappy with it, and assuming everything is f-ed and that there's no plan and that the damn sky is falling. I also don't get bashing a pick when none of us have seen any of these guys play. It's not like basketball or football when these guys have been playing on national television. I guarantee nobody here had ever even thought about Nick Yorke for a second in their life before last night. Want to be skeptical about the pick for that reason? Sure! Wish they had taken someone else who you really liked? Great! Immediately assume they don't know what they're doing and there there's clearly no plan? Zero basis for that. Lots of pre-2004 energy on the Forum the past 22-ish hours.

Round 3 is here folks. There's a few quality college arms remaining (e.g., Cole Wilcox, Seth Lonsway). I think if there's a college player the Sox like...they might need to get him here as he would probably be less likely to be around in Round 4 than a HS player they covet. I'm veeeery intrigued to see what's about to happen.
Here's 10 HS names I'd be excited to land (quite frankly could be in any of Rounds 3-5):
1. Kevin Parada – C (CA) 2. David Calabrese – OF (ON, Canada) 3. Carson Montgomery – RHP – HS (FL) 4. Tanner Witt – RHP – HS (TX) 5. Kala’i Rosario – OF/1B/3B (HI) 6. Petey Halpin – OF (CA) 7. Alejandro Rosario – RHP – HS (FL) 8. Coby Mayo – OF – HS (FL) 9. Harold Coll – SS – HS (GA) 10. Blaze Jordan – 1B/3B – HS (MS)

Where is the Orioles' money going? I don't get it. The same org that didn't invest in the international market for years, so who knows...

Why is Casey Martin (SS) still on the board?

Why is Casey Martin (SS) still on the board? All physical tools, no polish that you'd expect for a college guy. I'm surprised too but I sorta get it.

Why is Casey Martin (SS) still on the board? I’m not gonna pretend to know too much about the guy but just looking at the numbers his production has trended down each year. This year is a tiny sample though Idk I’m sure that’s something that’s been taken into account though. Not necessarily what you want to see at the college level

I am not assuming that they have no plan, I assume that they actually like the player that they drafted and will sign him to a deal that is within 15% of the slot value. I just think that there were very compelling players still on the board and I am hoping that the area scout really found something that apparently most people did not see.... I am just skeptical.
I would argue however that this wish casting that there will be a huge amount of slot savings that we will then use on future picks in this shortened draft is what is without merit. How often have people speculated that player x drafted after pick 10 was going to sing for a substantial discount and then be entirely wrong? More importantly how often has it actually happened?
This draft format (more or less) has existed for several years now and there are few (if any) examples of a team implementing the suggested strategy with any actual success?

Not to belabor the point too much, but also how many times has a team used the undershot savings from a mid to late first round pick to get a prospect of actual note. The closest we came to that strategy was when we signed trey Ball for $400,000 under slot (but again at 7) and used those savings to sign Jon Denney.
Simply put the best draft strategy is the easiest one - Best Player Available. Don't get cute, don't try to project how the board will shake out over 30-60 picks out. Take your favorite guy that you can sign.

Looks like White Sox went way off the board so they can sign Jared Kelley.

Based on ranking, not much left on the board where the 1st round under slot strategy pays off. Wait, what? There's still tons of high school talent left.

If they get the idea he's signable, I'd have zero problems taking Tanner Witt.
