I'm highly surprised if they could had Castillo and use him without his salary being an issue that he wasn't part of the group. That's the agreement right you can use any of the 60 guys without adding them to the 40 right?

According to Transactions here, Kickham was sent down on 3/8. Was he brought back? I think you're right about the reasons for the other two (and Longhi definitely got an invite). One thing worth noting: they probably did a historical study of players used in 60-game stretches, and know how many potential MLB contributors they want on the 60-man squad, broken down by position. But I'm at a loss for the rationale for leaving off the list at this point all of the 9 guys who also seem obvious. Unless they want the eventual news story to include the whole list of names (but why Wong, then?). If PTBNL's are not allowed in deadline trades, that would make the protection decision for prospects much harder, but I think that would have been reflected by more teams doing what the Sox have done. 1) Good point on Kickham. Missed that. So it's probably that the additions of Munoz and, to a lesser extent, Pillar and Puello in February pushed those two guys down the depth chart. Edit: Also, Verdugo getting healthy is the other one. So it's probably that and Munoz. 2) I think they're being prudent and concentrating on seeing what they need to buttress this group before adding the prospects. Not really sure why some teams immediately announced all 60 though. 3) Wong is there because they need enough catchers to catch the pitchers. I'm highly surprised if they could had Castillo and use him without his salary being an issue that he wasn't part of the group. That's the agreement right you can use any of the 60 guys without adding them to the 40 right? To use a guy in MLB he would of course need to be added to the 40-man. They don't get to use a player and not play him. Put it this way - Castillo is behind John Andreoli on the depth chart.

I should have not read that so quickly. He's not an option because of his contract which has been the case for years. It's not a talent thing for a guy who has basically hit .300 for the last three years in AAA. No reason to put him on the 60 when you are never going to add him to the 40 because of his contract. That would be stupid. Castillo would be a great 4th OF and one of the best 5th OF in Baseball if not for his contract.

My thought was since things are such a mess it'd be nice if MLB loosened up a restriction which pretty much hurts only Castillo. The Sox pay him either way it's just that they can't call him up and play him without getting penalized. And he really gets screwed if he does not get paid due to the Minor League season being cancelled.

Those are distinct cases. Pedroia is due his money and it will count against the cap. Castillo was DFAd and there were no takers. He came back off the books. His salary isn't part of the cap calculations. The caveat is that I have not read through the agreement for this shortened season. There may be some contingencies in there I'm unaware of. Yes, Pedroia is due his money. But I'd think he'll be getting $5 million, not the full $13m. Unless he's allowed to opt out of the season and carry his contract over to 2021.

Fangraph's look at some of the AL East prospects we might see: Boston Red Sox Prospect List / Depth Chart Another club with relatively few prospects in its pool, Boston’s sole rookie-eligible player is Rule 5 pick Jonathan Arauz, who projects to play a bench role and occasionally spell Michael Chavis at second base if he sticks on the roster. Third baseman/first baseman Bobby Dalbec is the best of the prospects likely to start the year at the alternative site camp, and if anything happens to either Rafael Devers or Mitch Moreland, Dalbec is the most likely candidate to replace them, leapfrogging the light-hitting utility types currently projected to be on the active roster’s bench. Recent minor league signee Yairo Muñoz, who left St. Louis on bad terms, is the dark horse to get hot in camp and threaten Dalbec’s primacy. C.J. Chatham is less likely to make an impact this year since he’s competing with a bunch of other defense/versatility types for playing time. Instead, even though he doesn’t have to be on the 40-man until this winter, I think the newly-acquired Connor Wong is likelier to play a 2020 role since he can catch and play the infield, a skillset that might be especially handy once roster sizes shrink later in the season. Boston currently has 47 players in their pool. blogs.fangraphs.com/analyzing-the-prospect-player-pool-al-east/

It's fairly obvious they're going to add prospects in the 13 (really 12) remaining slots, for example, and no mention here. Also the Arauz comment doesn't even consider Peraza, which feels like a swing-and-miss. I do agree with the Dalbec comment and felt the omission of Longhi from the initial roster showed their faith in Dalbec as the next guy up at 1B behind Moreland and Chavis.

If interpreting the rules correctly, I would not expect many players not on the 40-man roster contributing unless the virus hits hard and several players are moved to the 60-day IL. With Sale going on the IL and taken off the 40-man roster that opens up one spot. Brian Johnson has already been named to 60-man pool and he needs to be added to the 40-man roster as the Sox need pitching. Everyone seems to think Lucroy is a given, but he'd have to been added as well if he's going to play in Boston.

Valdez, Hall, Springs, Mazza, and Osich are all guys who could be DFA if they need a spot for someone who'll contribute, depending on where they are on the depth chart at a given time. Frankly, I think it's more likely that Lucroy gets added than Johnson if they aren't going to DFA anyone yet (although I think both will be added). Depends on how things look over the next 3 weeks in terms of how they want to deploy guys for the 5th spot in the rotation.

Per MLBtraderumors.com, as anticipated, Jonathan Lucroy has been added to the Red Sox players pool giving the Sox 48 players.

FWIW, John Heyman has said on MLB network that the Red Sox are a possibility to sign Yasiel Puig (so are 29 other teams, right?).
Doesn't mean that's going to happen obviously. I don't think that Puig's agent is Boras is it?
Anyways, wasn't expecting to hear Puig's name in the same sentence as the Red Sox.
And with Benintendi, JBJ, and Verdugo in the OF with Pillar looking for ABs, I wouldn't anticipate Puig in the mix.

soxprospects.com/2020.htmWe've updated our roster projections. Ian and I get more into this on the podcast, but I no longer think Lucroy is a foregone conclusion to make the roster. (Of course, this all assumes full health, which is a hell of an assumption at this point.) Consider that the roster goes from 30-to-28-to-26 in 4 weeks' time. They probably aren't going to carry 3 catchers on a 26-man roster. And as I understand it, the three-man taxi squad will contain a catcher. But look at what happens to a six-man bench on a 30-man roster. In two weeks, you're getting rid of one guy, then another in another 2 weeks. If the bench is Plawecki, Lucroy, Peraza/Chavis, Arauz, Pillar, Lin, the first cut is probably Lin getting DFA. The second would almost HAVE to be the third catcher, right? To maintain depth, the third catcher should be on the three-man traveling taxi squad. Part of me wonders whether they re-did Lucroy's contract to pay him a significant amount even if he's not on the active roster, basically making it worth his while to be on the taxi squad until he's needed (i.e., Vazquez or Plawecki gets hurt). As such, we've demoted Lucroy and promoted Osich (although that really could just say "pitcher revolving door"). We also removed De La Guerra and Kickham and added Feltman and Jimenez. Just more a question of how many prospects versus AAAA depth they plan to have, but CDLG would've been behind Chatham, Hernandez, and Munoz at least, so it's hard to see the need for him. Same with Kickham on the depth chart. Jimenez was the only active top-10 guy we didn't have on there yet, and Feltman feels like a guy they might want to bring in to work with him, although we don't feel strongly about him specifically.

31 players and 7 field personnel across baseball have tested positive. Apparently Darwinzon Hernandez and Josh Taylor are positives. Last I heard ERod is still home because a friend tested positive. I haven't seen any test results for him but might have missed it. Link with no forwarding link: www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/07/red-sox-sign-rhp-caleb-simpson.html

Ian Browne @ianmbrowne · 9h Roenicke says Eovaldi is throwing close to 100, even in this early live BP.

Are the 3 players on the Taxi Squad required to be on the 40 man roster?

Are the 3 players on the Taxi Squad required to be on the 40 man roster? Good question. I don't think so. Obviously they'd need to be added to play in a game though.

We made a few changes to our projection today. We've added Yorke and Jordan (it now feels like more teams around MLB are bringing in draftees than not), and moved McHugh to the IL. Longhi and Feltman come off.
It makes sense that teams want to bring in the draftees. Guys who have been in the system, you've worked with them, know them, know what they need and what they don't. It would stand to reason that with new guys, it's more important to bring them in and get to know them.

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 18h Jonathan Lucroy caught Brandon Workman, Colten Brewer and Ryan Brasier consistently throughout the COVID shutdown. Had a facility in Dallas they used.

I'm sure it can be backdated as well.
