soxprospects.com/2020.htmWe've updated our projections with the Sox now keeping 5 spots open. One has a strong likelihood of going to Godley. I think with the uncertainty in the pitching staff, they don't want to hamstring themselves by adding too many minor leaguers yet. there's some wisdom to that. That said, if they're not planning on bringing Casas in at all, I will have to question that line of thinking.

Moar tweaks: soxprospects.com/2020.htm- Lucroy on. Seems fait accompli he makes it, even if it leads to hard decisions later. - Taylor to IL. Roenicke said after game he's in hotel room and not throwing. We're still holding off on Darwinzon, who's playing catch. - Hall on, Osich off, although it's not that we feel terribly strongly about it.

That's encouraging to hear but an unasked question (that I'll ask) is has he improved his judgment? Swinging at lousy pitches and eschewing walks altogether will still result in a mediocre on-base average. If he shows better judgment on pitches and the mechanical changes are a big improvement, then you really got something.

As Ian just pointed out on Twitter, expect some roster shuffling in the next few days. If they're signing Godley and adding both Johnson and Lucroy, that's two spots that need to be cleared on the 40-man.
Based on our current projection for the 30-man roster (and IL), the only guys not active they could DFA would be: Valdez Shawaryn Osich Dalbec Chatham Hart Aybar Wilson
Unless they're already bailing on the guys they added to protect from Rule 5, who are the bottom 5 guys on the list, it's a short list of options.
EDIT: Never mind. COVID IL takes guys off the 40-man too.

Another very hard thrower, with an emphasis on that last word - thrower. The walks/hits per 9 expose the lack of control/command. It's been hard to to get the ball in the strike zone and when it does sneak in there it's been all too hittable. Not a pitcher, yet.

Feels like he's said the same sort of things about a number of guys. Seems like they're really planning to mix and match and play the hot hand in those last two spots.
Among the guys who I think I've seen mentioned for possible bulk or opener or whatever roles include Johnson, Springs, Hall, Mazza, Brewer, Osich, Darwinzon (back in the spring), and I think Brice.
I think the plan is if a guy is dealing, let him eat innings rather than just do one-inning stints as a rule. Think old-school pitching staff usage on those days. Then you try and get it figured out by the time you cut down to 26 and/or when E-Rod gets back.

I don't disagree with what you said, just surprised it's Colten Brewer. I can't remember Colten Brewer ever mentioned in that role or stretched out to 3. I just looked, he hasn't started since 2016 when he was a Pirates A+ farmhand.

Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee have been released by the Rockies (cost trimming). Unfortunately, both have vesting options.
We could see more of these if teams look to trim their 2021 payroll.

not really sure why they wouldn't give McGrath and or Wade a shot? considering the names they brought in, they know what they have in them and both proved effective.

I just looked, he hasn't started since 2016 when he was a Pirates A+ farmhand. It's the we are throwing everything including the kitchen sink against the wall to see what sticks approach. He's got a good arm, yet your not worrying about ruining him either like with a Matt Barnes. We need a few out of no where starters that at minimum eat some innings. Call me crazy yet I'm kinda excited to see it. A parting gift from DD.

I am actually surprised that we haven't seen Matt Barnes mentioned. I am guessing that if he didn't catch Covid, Darwinzon would also be in the conversation.

I'd rather see them throw a Hembree out there for a couple innings in a 1-3 inning role if the situation is that bad. barnes is the only other reliever the team can count on fairly certain, other than Workman for late innings. Without just one of those the pen is miserable instead of just plain bad.
