Thanks all.
Ray, fwiw, I don't believe Alex ever worked for the Hartford Courant. He started at the New Hampshire Union Leader before WEEI. Was it at the Union Leader maybe?

Maybe, it's been quite a while or maybe the Courant also carried the story. I just googled and was able to find a picture of a 2007 Courant that looks like it could be what I am remembering. Unfortunately the quality is low and I can't see the name but I was searching for Alex Speier, Hartford Courier, draft and saw it in images. There's a free trial (for a newspaper archiving service) but It requires a credit card number and I didn't want to go that in depth for a minor detail. ADD: Publication:Hartford Courant iLocation:Hartford, ConnecticutIssue Date:Wednesday, August 22, 2007 Page:Page C05 Search: alex speier 5 matches found

Chris, if you want to do some legwork, 2007 makes sense because I remember where I was living in 2007 and remember reading them there at an internet cafe, I also remember posting the links in SoxProspects. In 2007 pretty much nobody except his mother knew who Alex Speier was so they should be a fairly easy search. It was a fantastic look into the Red Sox draft room including players they were hoping for.

Alex Speier never worked for them. At that time only the columnist Jeff Jacobs and Dom Amore (think he's still there - have met him, he's a nice guy with interesting stories from when he covered the Yankees and from when he interviewed Smokey Joe Wood) were worth reading. The Courant started carrying stories from other papers so that's probably what it was as Speier never worked for the Hartford Courant. I don't even bother getting it anymore. It's that bad and empty unfortunately. I used to get it because I loved being able to sit down, eat breakfast, look at the standings and read the box scores. Man, I wish that was an option now.

For me it was The Lowell Sun. They has a writer named Coggins (or similar) that I loved to read.
