Nick Pavetta at minimum wage is an A level trade chip as is Verdugo. It's the money position we haven't seen in a while. How about Pivetta projected to get $6.9m in arb and Verdugo at $9.2m?

So a total of less than two WAR/$ between them? It’s not technically minimum wage but it’s value for a team looking for rentals to eat innings and play a serviceable RF.

Given the absolute dearth of affordable pitching, I don't believe the Sox will be trading someone who can start and is working for maybe a third of what he's actually worth. I've disabused myself of that notion.

And even if his play in the second half was over his head, his baseline traditional final season statistics were very solid! He had a 4.04 ERA and 11.5 K:9. He's at nearly 500 innings with the Red Sox and has a 4.22 FIP. So yeah, even if he can't fully sustain that second half run, he's basically an excellent #4. I get that the inconsistency is always frustrating, but he's got a much higher floor than the usual guy with his upside. If he didn’t have the inconsistency he’d be at the top of the rotation imo- like you said there’s just more upside there than what you get out of the typical backend SP profile. It wouldn’t shock me in the slightest if he were to put it together for a full season and get Cy Young votes. But I guess that’s the frustrating thing about him- he probably won’t but the talent is there for it Pivetta = Porcello?

Yes, Pivetta = Porcello, but without the Cy Young, and without upsetting Kate Upton.

Far from it.

There's definitely a lot to compare in their career trajectories. The big difference is that by the time he was 30, Porcello had over 2000 innings under his belt. Pivetta is 30 and he has less than half that wear and tear on his arm - a little less than 884.

True enough. Porcello was a teenager when he was first called up and spent hardly any time in the minor leagues. I'm hopeful Pivetta's longer apprenticeship and his (so far) rubber arm serve him well going forward.

IMO, Pivetta should be re-signed / extended as 142.2 innings, 183 strikeouts, and a 1.12 WHIP are some good numbers for Breslow to work with!

If they could sign him to an affordable 3ish year extension I’d be all for it, especially if they think his outstanding underlying metrics last year are a result of the new pitch mix.
