Nice trade to get back anything for a DFA candidate. Koss actually ranked as Fangraphs' 27th best prospect in the Rockies' system prior to the 2020 season:

Interesting trade beyond the fact that it clears a rsoter spot for the Red Sox to acquire somebody.
I thought they'd get an organizational type for a guy they were going to probably let go in Aybar.
Instead they got a guy with great numbers, although that's a huge grain of salt, given his advanced age for that league.
Still the scouting reports think he can hit, although he has work to do, and he might be the kind of guy who can stick at SS, but might slide over to 2b. In other words there's a chance he's a decent utility player. That's better than I thought they'd do for this type of trade.

I like it. Good move to clear a spot. He was probably going to get DFAed anyways.

Opens up the Rule 5 slot, but doesn't preclude settling Pedroia to open up two.
If they can do this with Chatham and Wilson, that allows them to not expose Mazza to waivers, which would explain why they struck a deal with him. That would mean waiving all but one of Walden, Brewer, Springs, Payamps and Grullon if they want to add 8 free agents as I suspect. At this point I don't think they'd miss Brewer, but the other four would be nice to keep in the org, Payamps because they liked him enough to claim him, Walden as a bounce-back candidate and the other two for their positional value.

In other words there's a chance he's a decent utility player. That's better than I thought they'd do for this type of trade. The numbers from the Pioneer League are the only numbers he has from anyone's minor league system. As is clearly pointed out in the Fangraphs prospectus, that's not anything to hang your hat on. The hitting environment in the high-and-dry towns where the league does its business distort those numbers like a funhouse mirror. It's not quite as stats-inflating as the California League, but then it is (or was) a rookie league so it wasn't as high up in the MiLB food chain either.
I'm sure the Sox had scouting reports on the guy, but I'd also bet they'll digress about his future performance projections till there are many more competitive PAs. Grand Junction is a long way from Boston in every sense of the term.

It better not open up a Rule 5 spot. We need to fill every spot with legitimate big league players who will help this season.

I like the deal. Koss will enter the rankings lower than Aybar was (32nd), but not by too much - maybe late 30s. Like I'd take Koss over Chatham or Cannon at this point. Making that slight step back to free up the 40-man spot is a good bit of business.

Given the 2020 minor league season, prospects are a classic market for lemons this offseason. I'll have low expectations for Koss next year.
