Yorke with a single and a walk. I'm no scout, but just watching his approach last year in the extended camp and today, he seems to have a special feel and approach at the plate. Of course, that's easy to tout in a SSS when he's reached base in almost every plate appearance.
Confident, too.

Kyle Hart< despite the bad calls by the ump, was throwing the ball pretty well. His velocity was much better than last year. I don't know where he will end up, but I was surprised at the velo of his pitches. Was reported after the season that he had lyme disease during the break between ST and Summer Camp and lost a bunch of weight. Seemed fine when he was shoving at the ATS, but wouldn't surprise me if he started to lose gas by the time he came up. Not that I think he'll ever be a true MLB starter, but would be nice if he turned into even an up-and-down swingman type. that explains why his fastball was so pedestrian last year and had to rely on his curve. He just didn't look right on the mound at all even struggling to locate that devastating curve.

He just didn't look right on the mound at all even struggling to locate that devastating curve. FWIW, he's always had pretty pedestrian velocity and I wouldn't agree he's got a devastating curve (I'd call it his fifth pitch, personally). The problem was he was typically able to use a five-pitch mix effectively and minimize mistakes. In MLB he made a bunch of mistake pitches that predictably got punished.

How did Ward look? His line is good. Observations?

How did Ward look? His line is good. Observations? He looked good. Struck out Albies, then hit a guy and had a throwing error on what should have been a routine play back to first, but got out of the jam.

Having guys like Seabold and Ward to watch even in ST is an upgrade over what our farm has given us in recent years. Between those two, Houck, and Mata I may dare to say I feel pretty confident we get a couple starting pitchers out of the group.

BTW, for whatever it's worth, reconfirmed this evening that Ward does prefer "Thaddeus," at least for rosters and the like (not that he dislikes "Thad"), and Politi does prefer "AJ".

Just watched the fifth & sixth innings. Ward's stuff moves. He lived up to his scouting report, inducing ground balls from a couple of batters, including the high chop he made the error on that was pounded into the turf.
Seabold will be up before the year is out. He comes as advertised with command of some serious pitches. He had the hitters really off balance on his two Ks, setting them up and putting them away. These were not the stars on the Braves, but it was still impressive.

You know what makes this season fun? Upside. There is a truly possible scenario where they make the playoffs and trade E-Rod for a crazy-good prospect package (to a team that is willing to give him an immediate extension).
Granted, it's the scenario where Eovaldi, Richards, Pivetta, Houck, and Seabold all pitch to their 90th percentile projections (which also requires the right set of injuries to give Seabold an extensive look). But who wouldn't bet $10 on that at 100,000 to 1?
OK, it may not be fun for a pessimist like you-know-who, but I think we can agree that this is one of the most interesting rosters we've ever seen. I may start a thread on upside predictions, e.g., what do you think the odds are that Franchy has a higher WAR than Benny?

No mlb player has ever gone by the name Thaddeus. Some Thads, two named Thaddeus who went by Ted, and a few with Thaddeus as a middle name. If he explodes (in a good way) we can just call him Thaddeus.

How many not He would implode after making what O'brian called the "shot put" error of a throw to 1b? i was impressed by Ward and he got the initial tough out in Albies, so he didn't face all 2nd stringers. I thought he looked very good myself and not really complaining, but so refreshing to see better angles of him here at ST than it was on MiLB of him in 2019.

Easy now... who is the pessimist if you say that scenario requires 5 starters to hit their 90th percentile? 100,000-1? Goodness. Such negativity! 🙃

1st inning
Perez getting grounders, Chavis made a nice scoop. Hit was wiped out by a double play but the hit was an infield squib where Perez did not get over to first in time
Kiké with a nice lead off AB against Wacha. Made him work, drew the walk

Joe and Will on the radio broadcast are talking a lot about Ward, whose family was sitting in front of the booth yesterday. Joe's being careful to say Thaddeus. Great story about a veteran player seeing Ward talking to an umpire on the back fields (either last spring before things got shut down or maybe the year before). The veteran pulled Ward aside to explain that that's just not something you do. Ward replied, "That's my dad..." Apparently he's a regular out there.
