This is the time of year where we generally see stories about players reporting to camp in the best shape of their lives. Typically that is followed by a statement that they have added 20lbs of muscle, etc. etc. I was always very skeptical of that for 3-months, but this year I have noticed many players have reported to camp having lost weight...
Vlad, Jr: -42 lbs A.Garcia: -36 lbs J.Familia: -30 lbs E.Escobar: -20 lbs C.Vazquez: -15 lbs E.Suarez: -15 lbs A.Meadows: -15 lbs
I am not suggesting this is a bad thing, just that it seems to be a different trend. Is something else going on that I am not aware of (PED testing or other)?

To do with being in better physical condition.

Agreed...Like I said, I don't think its a bad thing, better physical condition is good. Nor do I think weight gain in the past was all muscle either. It just seems like more emphasis on weight loss this year

I have to guess part of it is Covid related.... last year’s preseason was a mess, and guys might have let conditioning slide. This year, they had gone through that awful year and might have hit the gym harder to avoid making the same mistake again.
How many of us didn’t spend a decent chunk of shut-in eating banana bread and drinking beer? 😬

Anyone remember Rich Garces and his weight loss? Didn't work out so great, ended his career.

I know on a personal level, many of my friends/co-workers have either gone noticeably up in weight or noticeably down over the past year.

Vlad was massive, yet okay at 1B, he wants to play 3B again so he needed to lose weight. If you want to look for PED guys I'd look for the guys that gain a ton of muscle in a short period of time, not guys that just lose weight.
Just brings up bad memories of Sandoval going home and gaining 40-50 pounds in a few weeks. He sure does love home cooking.

Dalbec looks much more trim, especially in his upper body. Good to see.

I know what you mean Umass, but "PEDs" encompass loads of different compounds. Some pack on lean muscle mass (testosterone etc.), some help recovery from injury while increasing bone joint health (HGH etc.), while others do none of the above. The reality is that (the general public) most guys on PEDs have 'dad bods' and don't look athletic at all.

My mention of PED's was looking for an underlying reason for why so many players are dropping weight. I was asking if there was increased testing that may have led players to stop using and the lack of PED's has led to them dropping the weight. I regret mentioning PED's as that has appeared to take away from what I was trying to raise as a topic.....Why are so many players dropping weight when in the past they were all gaining 20lbs of muscle in 3-months?

Last year was tough for many to get into a routine, while this year they've had more time to figure out what they have to do.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to imply anything either just making *cough* light of the situation. Did Sandoval really gain that much weight in a couple weeks?!? How is that even possible? I was joking around given the crazy weight he gained while with us, yet he gained 21 pounds in 21 days before we signed him and then things got much worse. www.masslive.com/redsox/2016/04/pablo_sandovals_weight_problem.htmlSo it wouldn't surprise me that a bunch of guys gained weight while locked inside during Covid and are now losing it. They closed the gyms, the team facilities weren't open to the players, then they had a crazy short time to get ready.
