I just edited this to reflect July 3, before tonight's game. The grades really do fit with the current team record - lots of high performance going on, with many trending up.
Grades by groups and players in each category (and another caveat - these are grades based on my expectations, not necessarily stand-alone)
One last comment - I certainly didn't see much of this result going into the year. Very pleasantly surprised!
Grade A
Eovaldi Pivetta Barnes Ottavino Taylor Whitlock Devers Bogaerts Verdugo Renfroe Martinez
Grade B
Sawamura Vazquez Arroyo Darwinzon H Plawicki ERod (moved up from C on July 3) Kiké H (moved up from C on July 3)
Grade C
Perez (C+/B-, really) Richards (but trending down) Dalbec (but trending up) Chavis Marwin G Santana (moved up from D)
Grade D
Franchi C (maybe better as an incomplete) Andriese
Incomplete
Workman Rios
Manager - Cora A (pressing the right buttons again, just like in 2018)

I hope they bring Franchi up just to see if he's an AAAA hitter or MLB hitter. Can't go wrong sending Santana back down. I always get excited when Dalbec is up. When he hits a ball, it's really hard, so anything can happen. He's also playing a very good 1B. Most surprising player of the year so far has to be Whitlock. It's especially sweet since the MFY's cast him off. Devers has been money. In the running for MVP, at least on the Red Sox. With runners on, he might be walked more. X is right with Devers. Solid as always. Then there's the Duran watch.

Kiké is an interesting case. He's at 1.1 fWAR/1.5 bWAR, and if you said at his signing that he'd be a 2.5 WAR player this year I think everyone would say Bloom killed it.
And yet...
I think the three things he has going against him are 1) a lot of his value has been on defense, which has been more solid than flashy; 2) he has a pretty poor WPA, i.e., he's come up short in important situations; 3) he's totally unsuited to the role of leadoff hitter that's been foisted on him. He can hardly be blamed for that last one, though, and I think if he had been doing his thing all along from the 8th spot in the order he'd be seen as a decent supporting piece.
I'd give him a B, I guess?

Hmmm, I can't really see how Marwin Gonzalez can be any higher than a D at this point.
While his defense has been better than average according to Fangraphs (his UZR is negative however), this doesn't make up for his 55 wRC+ or the 3M he's taking up on the major league payroll.

Hmmm, I can't really see how Marwin Gonzalez can be any higher than a D at this point. While his defense has been better than average (1.9 fWAR), this doesn't make up for his 55 wRC+ or the 3M he's taking up on the major league payroll. The remarkable thing about Marwin is the caliber of defense at each position he has played. He makes impossible plays so consistently that, IMO, on a 4-man bench he would be considered a uniquely valuable defensive replacement ... like a reliable Mitch Moreland pinch hitter, but with a glove instead of a bat. With his bat yet to show up, he can be a drag on a 3 man bench, despite the runs and games he has saved. Imagine if he could raise his OBP and remember his power stroke.

Yeah, it's 2 days early, but I don't see anything happening that will drastically change my grades. Here are my caveats - I listen (not watch) the games, read the scoreboards daily, and am not into advance stats - so these are just my "ear"/reading judgements. I am sure others here will provide much more interesting, analytically-derived grades - but this is just a mid 60s, fan since 1967, die hard fan's ratings. Grades by groups and players in each category (and another caveat - these are grades based on my expectations, not necessarily stand-alone) One last comment - I certainly didn't see much of this result going into the year. Very pleasantly surprised! Grade A Eovaldi Pivetta Barnes Ottavino Taylor Whitlock Devers Bogaerts Verdugo Renfroe Martinez Grade B Sawamura Vazquez Arroyo Darwinzon H Plawicki Grade C ERod (but trending up) Perez Richards (but trending down) Dalbec (but trending up) Chavis Kiké H (but trending up) Marwin G Grade D Franchi C Santana Andriese Incomplete Workman Rios Manager - Cora A (pressing the right buttons again, just like in 2018) I would give Perez a B based on the fact that he is paid like a fifth starter and that’s what the expectation should be with him. Yet he has basically been our third best starter. Similarly I’d give Arroyo an A given how well he has done for what he is expected to do and I think he’ll be back from injury soon. I’d give Darwinson a C (way too many walks) and Chavis and Marwin Ds (unplayable on offense). The rest of it looks pretty good to me.

Moving Perez to a B (good reasoning, FenwayFanatic) - Rios a B, Workman a C (perhaps trending up). Ratings are pretty high, I know - but then again we are close to being the best team in baseball!

Super nit-picky, and agree with a B rating for him, but I don't think "foisted" is quite fair here. From what I recall he asked for the opportunity to bat leadoff. Obviously still Cora's call, but not like he was placed there against his will.

Just edited my original post with current view after last night's win at Oakland - it is July 3 afternoon. Life is good.
