Seems like a fairly team-friendly deal considering he was just a few months from free agency, is in the prime of his career, and is coming off a dominant year, no?

Fantastic and surprising news. I thought based off if this season he could have commanded more. He must have truly have wanted to stay. Glad to see that. A true Red Sox.

Not a bad deal at all. At the start of the season I did not think he could handle the closer role. He has proven me so wrong even if he regresses he has proving worthy of that role moving forward.

Makes sense for him to sign an extension if he really likes Boston and wants to be here anyway. Signing now after half a good season is in the books is a good injury hedge from him. He is originally from Connecticut so maybe that’s part of it.

The figures are a bit distorted by the signing bonus and buyout. It's a 18.75$ over 2 years (9.375$ AAV) + 5.75$ (+ incentives) option contract. 9.375$ is a bit closer to market value than 7.x$.
It's still a bargain...i'm pretty sure he could have gotten 4 guaranteed years at that value on the market.

1/2 of what Kimbrel makes. SMH. We’re all gonna love Chaim Bloom

I think it's a fair deal. I think the spreadsheets will say the Red Sox got a little bit of a bargain, but Barnes is apparently a sticky stuff guy so that needs to be taken into account. Relievers sometimes get ludicrously overpaid so it's surprising Barnes would settle for this 3 months away from free agency.
Kind of a nit pick but I think it's a little toxic to have a Games Finished incentive in a contract.

The value lies in the option and the limited years.
I actually like the "games finished" incentive. If they let him close x games over 2 seasons, then he has proven to be a reliable closer. If if fails to prove that, you can still exercise the option for a "non closer" at a reasonable price.

I don’t think he’ll ever be better than he has been this year and more likely regresses a bit, but this is a very fair deal. Glad to see us hold onto a UConn guy too.

Considering what relief pitchers have made in recent years, especially closers this looks like an absolute steal. If Barnes pitches as well down the stretch as he has all season he could have received close to double the AAV and at least an extra year.

Really good, solid deal and one less question mark heading into this offseason. Like it.

Pitching is expensive, and I mean all kinds of pitching, nice deal for both player & team !

I looked up "team-friendly" in the next edition of Dickson's Baseball Dictionary and it had a picture of Barnes and Bloom, with Cora in the background, and a shadowy figure that may have been Varitek.
This makes me optimistic that everyone else will do something similar (E-Rod, Devers, new contracts for JDM and Xander when they hit their opt-outs). Winning championships is worth a ton to most players, so playing for a team that's run as well as the Sox are is very desirable.
