Everybody knows Nelson de la Rosa, but who is Karim Garcia?

Quick reaction: A low-impact but decent trade that improves the bottom of the staff.
Robles' 8.8 K/9, 4.9 BB/9 and 1.39 WHIP are underwhelming. Still, he's probably better than Andriese or Rojas and we really didn't give anything up.

Oof not a good first deadline for Bloom IMO. This is technically Blooms 2nd deadline. Last year he did relatively well with trading moreland and such.

Oh I take back every negative thing I've said about Robles. The Red Sox needed this guy!

Help him find the 2019 version though

Oof not a good first deadline for Bloom IMO. You build championship teams over the winter, not at the trade deadline.

Throws hard, presumably something that they think they can fix. Not impressed at first glance but we’ll see what they can do with him.

The Twins also sent cash to the Sox in that trade which leads me to believe, they're still under the luxury tax threshold as Speier and McAdam reported.

Just throwing this out there maybe they looked at him and they know just making an adjustment he'll be better. I dont know . I was rooting for Scherff just got to AA. I wonder what the Nationals wanted for Bell.

When do we get someone to say that the Red Sox see something in Robles that they believe they can tweak and return him to his 2019 self.

I don't get it. He's not good and he doesn't have options, so he's not a guy who provides roster flexibility.
I don't even think he's an upgrade over Workman.
I guess Andriese/Bazardo/Sawamura/Brasier are all hurt, so if a guy goes down, they don't have depth. But Brasier and Sawamura should be back soon, and if they need an emergency guy, I would frankly rather they call up Brennan/Ort/Walden. Or maybe, you know, don't DFA Workman.
Only two explanations I can see: 1) Sox saw something in him and think they can fix him 2) John Henry was leaning on Bloom to pick up a pitcher for optics' sake, so he just picked up a random guy

The other part is I was (irrationally and overly) excited about Scherff. Given the year he's having, are we 100% sure Scherff couldn't outpitch Robles right now? xFIP of 3.60, mostly in High-A. He's got a ways to go still to be at the level of a fungible major league reliever.

With regards to the entire deadline, sometimes the best trades are those you don't make.\
I hope the Ice Horse has a good future.

This trade probably amounted to Chaim saying can we get anything at all for our rule 5 guys?
The answer to that question is Hansel Robles which shows how lowly regarded those guy are.
The good news is that none of these guys are going to be Garrett Whitlock.

Ya, I liked to Schwarber deal, and even can see the Davis deal as ok if I squint. I just don't get this one unless Scherff was being a pain for the organization and they just wanted to dump him, because that's basically what they did. I'm in agreement that I don't see how Robles doesn't end up getting DFA'd at some point this year and I was hopeful with Scherff's performance since being moved to the pen. Not real hopeful, but if I had to give odds, I'd put Scherff getting to the majors at some point slightly higher than Robles being a post season pitcher for the Red Sox this year.

Probably says they were going to prioritize protecting other RP types over Scherff this off-season. If they see something they think they can fix why not take a shot at it.

Which is higher: the chance Sherff makes it onto a 40-man this December or the chance Robles is still on the Red Sox at the end of the season?

How do they get him on the 40-man roster, especially when they have to clear spaces for Sale and Brasier?
Having dealt Chavis, I'd be surprised if they DFA'd Santana from the IL. They didn't add any position-player depth (+ KS, - Chavis).
They can probably pass Rosario through waivers, and they can put Mata on the 60-day list, and that covers Sale and Brasier. But it looks like they'd have to also lose Potts on waivers to make room for Robles.
Furthermore, to get both Sale and Robles on the active roster, they have to [Edit:] option either Sawamura or Darwinzon, or DFA Rios, who they clearly like and who has been better than MLB average since his first 3 outings for us. No way Rios clears waivers. So it doesn't look like an upgrade.
The only thing that makes sense is if they can DFA him and keep him in the organization ... if he clears waivers, he can declare free agency and they should be able to re-sign him. You'd have to be sure you could do that, though, right?
The weirdest thing? Robles has a 0.77 WPA despite a .351 twOBA. Based on WPA, he'd step in and be our 5th best reliever! Seriously? Another game log I have to scrutinize ...
