Interesting to see how this plays out.

Yeah……I’m intrigued where this is going. If Hunter is telling the truth, and I think he is I hope the Sox have his back if this shit blows up.

The Sox have basically said he is wrong, that they have been following the protocols. Although there aren't many shades of gray in between these sides of the story, i am inclined to believe that something must have been lost in translation. I just don't see the Sox or MLB feeling like that would be agood solution for an outbreak.

This just doesn't make sense from any angle if you take a step back. I don't understand - where is the motivation or benefit to MLB for them to make that recommendation to the Red Sox. Unless you think MLB wanted to try to tamp down the talk of needing to postpone or eliminate games. That seems pretty far-fetched. There certainly is no benefit for the team that is in the midst of a COVID fire to stop testing. I could very well be wrong and maybe Hunter has a story to tell, but something is not adding up.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone lower in the MLB food chain at the ground level said something off the cuff to someone at a similar position in the Red Sox org, and the telephone game evolved and by the time it got to Hunter it was what he said.

The only thing I can think of that sounds plausible is that MLB told the team "we can see that this is spiraling out of control and affecting your playoff chances, so we'll cut you some slack on testing, which will reduce the number of asymtomatic guys that get popped, and only force guys with symptoms to go to through the Covid-IL process." Not saying it's a good idea or respectful of the safety of the families of the players but it's the only plausible interpretation of what we know thus far that I can think of.

I think both of these takes are good possibilities. I also think it's possible that Hunter carelessly repeated false clubhouse gossip. Every workplace has conversations that start with "Hey, did you hear?" followed by an animated analysis of a false rumor about two colleagues sleeping together, speculation as to why someone got canned, company is about to be sold, layoffs are coming, the boss got arrested for DWI last weekend, etc. To put it not so elegantly, I think Hunter was talking out of his ass. He stated as fact something that was a topic of uninformed clubhouse speculation. It's a good example of why Patriots players are browbeat to answer every question with some variation of "I'm just trying to get better," "We're focused on the next game," or "We respect every opponent."

So when do the Sox get a second round pick taken away for Renfroe’s comments?

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. I suspect the Red Sox tested more frequently than the protocol requires, someone from MLB pointed out that they don’t need to do that, and somewhere along the way the message got twisted.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that all coaches and other staff will be required to be vaccinated (first shot of Pfizer or Moderna, with an appointment for the second, will suffice) in order to be allowed "on the field" in the playoffs. Not sure if that includes the dugouts.
